Notes and Research

  • mahdûm: son
  • ceddi: his grandfather
  • kibâr-ı a'yân: the leading notables, the great notables
  • meclis-i a'yân: the advisory and governing body made up of the city's leading men
  • küşâde-meşreb: open-hearted, generous and easygoing by nature

A Short Entry

The entry is less a biography than a record of a waqf family: his lineage and waqf duty come to the fore rather than his own affairs. Hüsameddin gives in a single sentence a chain of three generations, beginning with Hacı Ahmed Bey and reaching his grandson, and thus shows that the trusteeship passed within the family from father to son. The entry's other detail is that membership of the council of notables went side by side with waqf duties in this family.

The text does not say which buildings the waqfs covered. The next entry, Meydan Ağası Ahmed Ağa, belongs to the same milieu as this entry, since he is from the Hızır Pasha quarter. No information was found in other sources about these waqfs or this person.
