In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He was the son of Sandukîzâde Abdülcelil Efendi, one of the scholars of the mevâlî class who came out of the madrasa. After learning knowledge and learning in Amasya, he became divan clerk of Hâce Ahmed Pasha and then defterdar of Sivas; in 1065 [1654-55] he was dismissed.

In 1068 [1657-58] he became defterdar of Sivas for the second time, and in 1071 [1660-61] he was dismissed because of the governor Kıbleli Mustafa Pasha. During the grand vizierate of Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha he lived in Amasya in exile; later he served in the mukataa and beytülmal trusts and as a divan clerk. He died in 1089 [1678-79].

He was a scholar, poet, scribe, münşî (writer of official documents), accountant and calligrapher. Because he had offended Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha over Kıbleli Pasha, he could not advance. In his poetry he used the pen name "Celîlî." Because as a child he had been the juz reader of the Oruç Bey Lodge, he was looked down on among the notables and called "Cüzhân Efendi."

His son Abdülcelil Efendi died in 1121 [1709-10] while clerk of the Yörgüç Pasha waqfs. The sons of this man were İbrâhim and Ali Efendis. When İbrâhim Efendi died in 1148 [1735-36], his son es-Seyyid el-Hâc Abdülcelil Ağa, while one of the kapıcıbaşıs, died in Istanbul in 1178 [1764-65]. Around this time his cousin Mustafa Efendi son of Ali Efendi son of Abdülcelil Efendi also died.

The Kıbleli Pasha Affair and the Defterdarship of Sivas

What happened to Abdülcelil Efendi is tied to the dispute over Kıbleli Mustafa Pasha described in the previous entry (Ahmed Ağa — Sarı, el-Hâc). This pasha, as brother-in-law of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, had been appointed governor of Sivas in November 1658. Abdülcelil Efendi, who worked beside the governor in Sivas as defterdar, was dismissed in 1071 because of his relationship with the governor, and when Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha became grand vizier he could not advance for the same reason. Hüsameddin gives this detail in a single sentence; no documentary details of the affair were found in other sources.

The Pen Name Celîlî

No information was found in other sources on the poems Abdülcelil Efendi wrote under the pen name "Celîlî." Other poets who used the same pen name are known; Hâmidîzâde Celîlî, born in Bursa around 1488, is among the 16th-century poets who produced a hamse. An Abdülcelil Efendi of Akhisar (1520-1566) also wrote poetry under the pen name Celîlî. None of these people should be confused with the 17th-century Amasya scribe of Hüsameddin; no source links them.

The Nickname "Cüzhân Efendi"

The explanation of the nickname is in the text: because in his youth he served as juz reader at the Oruç Bey Lodge, the notables mentioned him with contempt by this name. No information on the Oruç Bey Lodge was found in another source. The post of his son as clerk of the Yörgüç Pasha waqfs relates to the Yörgüç Pasha Complex in Amasya; the details of this complex are the subject of a separate entry.
