  • evlâd-ı inâs: female children
  • ümerâ: beys, commanders
  • Abaza vak'ası: the rebellion of Abaza Hasan Pasha

The Sentence Left Unfinished

In footnote no. 60 of the text, the editors note that the sentence must have been left incomplete by the author by mistake. From the flow of the text it is understood that it was meant to say to whom the trusteeship of the waqf of Mahmûd Çelebi would pass on Mehmed Bey's dying childless, but since the continuation is unknown, this part remains incomplete. No information on the waqf of Mahmûd Çelebi was found in another source.

The Çakalzâdes and the Baki Paşazâdes

At the head of Mehmed Bey's lineage appears Çakal Kadı Bedreddîn Mahmûd Çelebi; the nickname "Çakalzâde" in the entry title most likely goes back to this ancestor, but no source confirming it was found. No information on this family was found in other sources either. The Ahmed Bey of the second paragraph is of the line of Baki Pasha. Hüsameddin writes that he took part in the Abaza incident. The rebellion of Abaza Hasan Pasha was a major uprising in Anatolia that caused Köprülü Mehmed Pasha to break off his 1658 Transylvanian campaign and return; which side Ahmed Bey took is not clear from the text. The Cretan war began with the Ottoman landing of troops at Chania in 1645 and ended with the surrender of Candia in September 1669. Ahmed Bey's term as mirliva falls in the years of this war.
