Original Text (Ottoman Turkish)

Amasyalıdır. Amasya’da mescid ve mahallesi olan Hacı Hamza Bey evlâdından Hamza Beyzâde el-Hâc Mustafa Ağa bin Abdulbaki Ağa bin Hamza Bey’in oğludur. Küçük yaşında Enderûn sarayına girip ilm-i ma’rifet öğrendi. Orada tefeyyüz ederek kilercibaşı oldu.

1069’da Sadr-ı a’zam Köprülü Mehmed Paşa ba’zı ahvâlinden şüphe edib kapıcıbaşılıkla taşra çıkardı.

Bunlardan Sarı Ahmedzâdeler, Hacı Hamza Bey’in evkâfına mütevelli idiler. Bu Hacı Hamza Bey’in vakfiyesini Bakkal Ömer Efendi’nin yedinde mütâla’a etdim. 881’de Hacı Hamza Bey’in mahdûmları Ahmed, Kâsım, Mahmûd, İsa Beyler tarafından tanzim etdirilmiş olduğunu gördüm.

In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He was the son of Hamza Beyzâde el-Hâc Mustafa Ağa son of Abdülbâkî Ağa son of Hamza Bey, of the line of Hacı Hamza Bey, who had a mosque and a quarter bearing his name in Amasya. At a young age he entered the Enderun Palace and learned knowledge and learning. Rising there, he became kilercibaşı.

In 1069 [1658-59] Grand Vizier Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, suspecting some of his conduct, sent him out to the provinces with the office of kapıcıbaşı. In 1071 [1660-61] he sent him as mukataat steward of Sivas, charged with investigating the situation of the governor Kıbleli Mustafa Pasha.

Because of this investigation Kıbleli Pasha was dismissed and imprisoned in the Amasya Fortress; he himself was exiled for a time during the grand vizierate of Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha. After Kıbleli Pasha died of wounds in 1074 [1663-64], since the investigation made then also revealed this man's loyalty, he became kapıcılar kethüdası in 1079 [1668-69].

In Zilhicce 1080, because of a minor act, he fell from the favor of the said grand vizier, was dismissed and retired. He was sent to Amasya with the trusteeship of the waqfs of Hüseyin and Fîrûz Ağas in Amasya. He lived for some ten years in sorrow and grief and died early in 1089 [1678-79].

His sons el-Hâc Abdülbâkî, Mustafa and Mehmed Ağas, together with their children, were called "Sarı Ahmedzâdes." Hacı Abdülbâkî Efendi was among the notables of the state and died in 1121 [1709-10], Hacı Mustafa Ağa in 1127 [1715], and Hacı Mehmed Ağa in 1138 [1725-26].

The sons of Hacı Mustafa Ağa were Abdullah and Mehmed Ağas. The Mufti of Amasya el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi son of el-Hâc Ömer Ağa son of el-Hâc Mehmed Ağa died in 1228 [1813], and Hâfız Mehmed Efendi son of el-Hâc İsmâil Ağa son of el-Hâc Abdullah Ağa, of the class of mevâlî kadıs and professors who came out of the madrasa, died in 1233 [1817-18]. The sons of Mufti Hacı Mehmed Efendi were Abdullah, Mehmed, Tahir and Osman Efendis.

When Osman Efendi died in 1251 [1835-36], his son Ömer Efendizâde Osman Ağa died in 1318 [1900-01]. His son Bakkal Ömer Efendi was alive at the time the book was written. One branch of these is the Sarı Hâfızoğulları. Of these, Mehmed Hilmi Efendi is the chief clerk of the municipality of the province of Amasya.

Of these, the Sarı Ahmedzâdes were the trustees of the waqfs of Hacı Hamza Bey. I examined the waqf deed of this Hacı Hamza Bey in the hands of Bakkal Ömer Efendi. I saw that it had been drawn up in 881 [1476-77] by the sons of Hacı Hamza Bey, Ahmed, Kâsım, Mahmûd and İsa Beys.

Kıbleli Mustafa Pasha and the Köprülü Family

Although the main subject of the entry is Ahmed Ağa, the narrative flows through a power struggle. In a footnote Hüsameddin writes that Abide Hatun, wife of Kıbleli Mustafa Pasha, was the maternal aunt of Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha, that is, the sister of his mother Ayşe Hanım; he adds that Köprülü Mehmed Pasha and Kıbleli Mustafa Pasha were both fellow townsmen and brothers-in-law (bacanak). This family tie is important for understanding what happened to Ahmed Ağa: the inspector sent by Köprülü Mehmed Pasha examined the province governed by his brother-in-law, and when the nephew of Kıbleli Pasha's wife became grand vizier, he paid for the investigation with exile. This order of events is Hüsameddin's account; the details of Ahmed Ağa's investigation could not be verified in other sources.

The information on the Köprülü family supports Hüsameddin's narrative. Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha was born in 1635-36 in Köprü (Vezirköprü); his mother was Ayşe Hanım, daughter of Yûsuf Ağa, the voivode of this town. Köprülü Mehmed Pasha also, as a young man, went to Köprü, attached to Amasya, and married Ayşe Hanım, and was therefore called "Köprülü." In a recently published study, Kıbleli Mustafa Pasha is mentioned as the brother-in-law (eniştesi) of Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, and it is written that he was appointed governor of Sivas in November 1658. The governor of Sivas in the text, that is, Kıbleli Pasha, was investigated about two years after that appointment. Hüsameddin gives this investigation as 1071, a year corresponding to 1660-61.

It should be noted that the name Abide Hatun appears elsewhere as well. The Abide Hatun Mosque in the village of Karamustafapaşa in Merzifon was built in the name of the mother of Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha. The Abide Hatun in Hüsameddin's footnote, however, is the wife of Kıbleli Mustafa Pasha, who had charitable works in Köprü. No source linking the two was found, so they should not be taken as the same person.

Hacı Hamza Bey and the Sarı Ahmedzâdes

The text gives a genealogy of the waqf trustees of Hacı Hamza Bey, who had a mosque and a quarter in Amasya. Hüsameddin writes that he saw the waqf deed with his own eyes, that it was dated 881, and that it was drawn up by the four sons of Hacı Hamza Bey. This is the most valuable information in the book, because the copy of the deed in Bakkal Ömer Efendi's hands is nowhere to be seen today. No information on the Hacı Hamza Bey Mosque or on this waqf deed was found in other sources. That Ahmed Ağa's line is traced down to around 1900 also shows that Hüsameddin knew the members of the family who were his own contemporaries.

Ahmed Ağa's retirement post was the trusteeship of the waqfs of Hüseyin and Fîrûz Ağas. No other source was found for the details of these waqfs.
