In Modern English

In Amasya he acquired learning from Gürcü İmam el-Hâc Hasan Efendi and from Kadızâde Küçük Mehmed Efendi, and became a müderris giving lectures open to all (ders-i âm). Passing through the usual madrasa grades in order, he became müderris of the Hüseyin Ağa with fifty akçe. Then, in the halvet cell of İcâdîzâde eş-Şeyh Hızır Efendi, sheikh of the Halvetiyye order, he purified his inner world and received a hilâfetname (certificate of permission to act as sheikh).

Later, while sheikh of the Müftüzâde Tekke and preacher of the Saraçhane Mosque, he died in Ramazan 1071 [1661]. He was a respected sheikh, a master of the religious sciences, extremely devoted to the religious rulings, an ascetic and a preacher. He is among the famous of the righteous.

About This Sheikh

Hüsameddin presents Bafralı Ahmed Efendi as a person who passed through both the madrasa and the tekke path. First he climbed the müderris ranks, then, trained under a Halvetî sheikh, he received permission to be a sheikh, and finally he became sheikh of a tekke and preacher of a mosque. Hâc Hasan Efendi, who is named in the text, is also mentioned as a teacher in entry no. 546 of the same volume (Ahmed Efendi-Zileli Muharremzâde); from this it appears that two scholars of Amasya took lessons from the same Gürcü imam.

For Ahmed Efendi's teachers, his sheikh and his date of death, no source other than Hüsameddin was found. The present state of the Müftüzâde Tekke and the Saraçhane Mosque could not be verified in this research either.
