He was the son of the famous calligrapher Fazlullah Efendi, preacher of the Hâtuniye. He learned and completed various kinds of script from his father and uncle, and the sciences from Uzun Müderris Mehmed Efendi; he gave lectures open to all and became chief clerk of the court.

He became professor of the Kâsım Bey Madrasa, vacated by the death of his uncle Ahmed Efendi, and early in 1093 [1682] deputy kadı (naib) of Amasya, and gained considerable influence and fame. At the end of the same year his office came to an end, and he died around 1094 [1683].

A Family of Calligraphers and Entry No. 560

This entry should be read together with entry no. 560, titled Ahmed Efendi — Hattât. There the preacher of the Hâtuniye Fazlullah Efendi is mentioned as the "ammizâde," that is, the cousin on his father's side, of the calligrapher Ahmed Efendi; Ahmed Efendi is also professor of the Kâsım Bey Madrasa. The Ahmed Efendi here (Fazlızâde), however, is Fazlullah's son and takes over the professorship of the Kâsım Bey Madrasa from the post vacated by the death of "his uncle Ahmed Efendi." When the two entries are combined, it is understood that the madrasa changed hands within the same family. Only one detail stands out: in 560 Fazlullah is the cousin of Ahmed Efendi, while in 566 Ahmed Efendi is called the uncle of Fazlullah's son. Hüsameddin may have used the kinship word here in a broad sense; there is no other explanation in the book.

The Deputy Judgeship of Amasya and the Kâsım Bey Madrasa

Hüsameddin writes that Ahmed Efendi came to the post of deputy kadı at the beginning of 1093 and that his office ended at the end of the year. The present state and location of the Kâsım Bey Madrasa could not be verified in another source. A madrasa ruin of the same name, dated to the 15th century, is recorded in the village of Yolpınar in Suluova; but no source was found stating that this madrasa is the one Hüsameddin mentions.
