The Hızır Pasha Madrasa and the Emîr Ağa Family

The Hızır Pasha Madrasa, where Ahmed Efendi served as müderris, is mentioned in Hüsameddin's book among the madrasas of Amasya where teaching was carried on. The entry briefly shows how the professorship changed hands: when Ma'kûlzâde İbrâhim Efendi died, the madrasa's post fell vacant and Ahmed Efendi was appointed to it. The date of appointment is not in the entry; the date of death is the twenty-second of Zilkade 1115.

That the father Mehmed Ağa is called "Emîr Ağa", and that Ahmed Efendi himself is described as "es-Seyyid" and "ulemâ-yı sâdât", shows that the family was among the sayyid families regarded as descended from the Prophet. The name of his teacher, Hızır Efendi, Mufti of Amasya, appears again in the next entry (597) as the teacher of Mufti Ahmed Efendi; it appears that Hızır Efendi trained more than one pupil in Amasya at the end of the seventeenth century. No information was found in other sources on these persons.
