In Modern English

He was the son of Gedik el-Hâc Hasan Efendi, son of Halîl, one of the scholars of Amasya. When his father died he came to the fore and became a member of the councils of pilgrims and notables; in 1189 [1775-76] he became hacıbaşı, and he died at the end of 1193 [early 1780]. He was one of the notables of the Gümüşlüzâde Quarter and belonged to a generous and noble family. He endowed some of his properties as a waqf by setting salaries for the muezzins of the Gümüşlüzâde Mosque.

On the Record

The entry is one of the short records in the section where Hüsameddin lists the notables and scholars of Amasya. Hacıbaşılık is the post given to the person who supervised the arrangements of those going on the pilgrimage from Amasya; the phrase "council of pilgrims and notables" in the text points to the group of pilgrims and notables who had a say in the administration of Amasya in those years. That Hasan Efendi's son became hacıbaşı in 1189 shows that he had reached a certain place within this council.

Hasan Efendi's death in 1193 falls in the same year in which the Canikli family fell in Amasya and Çapanoğlu Mustafa Bey took control of the city; however, the record says nothing about whether the death was connected with these events. For the Gümüşlüzâde Quarter and its mosque named in the text, no additional source concerning Hasan Efendi could be found in this study. No information on Gedik el-Hâc Hasan Efendi or his son was found in other sources.
