In Modern English

He was from Köprü. He was the son of Çiloğlu Hâfız Mehmed Efendi. After completing his studies in Amasya under Îydîzâde Hacı Mustafa Akif Efendi, he returned to Köprü and received the authorization to give general lectures. For a long time he devoted himself to teaching knowledge and granted licenses (icazet).

In 1171 [1757-58] he became professor of the Abdülkerîm Ağa Madrasa; he served three times as mufti of Köprü, about seven years in total. In early 1192 [1778] he passed to the eternal world. He was one of the well-known scholars, a man of virtue, very learned in jurisprudence, dignified, devoted to the sharia, well-mannered, and mature.

Seyyid Hacı Ahmed Efendi, son of Hacı Mustafa Efendi, one of the scholars of Amasya, was also a mature authority in general lectures and died in 1192. His son-in-law Emîr İmâmzâde Seyyid Ebûbekir Efendi and his father-in-law Hacı Mustafa Efendi were also of the scholars.

Learning Between Amasya and Köprü

This entry should be read together with the previous one. Both men are from Köprü, and both studied in Amasya and taught in Köprü. Çilzâde's teacher Îydîzâde Hacı Mustafa Akif Efendi is also mentioned in the next entry among the teachers of Ahmed Efendi of Gümüş. In this way a link becomes visible in which students who studied in Amasya served as muftis and professors in surrounding districts such as Köprü and Gümüş.

The phrase "three times, about seven years" as mufti suggests that this post was given to the same person repeatedly for fixed terms. In passing, the text also briefly mentions a second Ahmed Efendi; for this man only his year of death and his son-in-law and father-in-law are known.

No information on these people was found in other sources.
