Being Both Mufti and Sheikh

What is interesting in the text is that the same man was at once a madrasa professor, a mufti, and the sheikh of a Nakşibendî lodge. Here the learning of the madrasa and the path of the lodge are intertwined. The sheikhdom is mentioned as an office passed from father to son: it is handed over to Ömer Reşid Efendi in 1192. His teacher Îydîzâde Mustafa Akif Efendi is also the teacher of Çilzâde in entry 685.

Gümüş is known today as Gümüşhacıköy. A search for the Şemseddin Efendi Lodge in the village of Eslimiş and the Halil Pasha Madrasa in Gümüş did not reach a reliable source.
