In Modern English

He is from Köprülü, near Amasya. Entering the Janissary corps in Istanbul, he was raised in the barracks of the novice boys (acemi oğlan) at Galatasaray. Then he advanced to the 261st company, and because he showed service in the wars he became company ağa. In the time of Sultan Ahmed Han I, through the efforts of some notables, he entered the corps's cadre and became zağarcıbaşı; but in 1013 [1604-05] he was dismissed. Then he became ağa of Buda and died there in 1021 [1612-13]. This information was learned from the records of the Janissary registers that I examined in the Ayasofya series.

Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • acemîyân kışlası: the barracks where the novice boys preparing for the Janissaries were trained
  • bölük ağası: commander of a Janissary company
  • dâhil-i katâr: entered the ranks, taken into the cadre
  • zağarcıbaşı: head of the zağarcı ortası (the hound-keepers' unit) in the Janissary corps
  • tabaka: here, the record group in which the Janissary registers were kept

The Zağarcıbaşı Office and Buda

The zağarcıbaşı was the head of the zağarcıs who formed the 64th company in the Janissary corps and was counted among the leading ağas of the corps; he was a natural member of the divan of the Janissary ağa. In documents he also appears in the forms "ser-zağarî" or "ser-zağarcı". Among the Janissary officers serving in large fortresses such as Belgrade, Baghdad and Buda there were also zağarcıbaşıs.

The reason for Alagöz Ağa's dismissal in 1013 is not given by Hüsameddin, and could not be found in another source either. His aghalik at Buda shows that he rose to a Janissary command in an important frontier fortress in the provinces. Hüsameddin bases this information on the register records he examined himself. No reliable record was found on the present-day equivalent of the name "Köprülü". No independent source on Alagöz Ağa was found other than Hüsameddin.
