The Kuşbaz Tekke
The Kuşbaz Tekke, which Ebûbekir Efendi took over from his father, is one of the Halvetî tekkes of Amasya. According to Kadir Özköse's study of the Halvetiyye tekkes in Amasya, the tekke was founded in 961 [1554] by Yâkub Efendi, one of the Halvetî shaykhs in Amasya, and its waqfs were arranged. Yâkub Efendi held the shaykhship of the tekke until the end of his life, and after him Şeyh Abdurrahman Efendi, a second Yâkub Efendi and Şeyh Hasan Efendi held this post. The tekke's location is on the east side of the Yakub Pasha precinct, facing the square east of today's Çilehane Mosque. This places the Kuşbaz Tekke right next to the great Halvetî center founded in 1412 by Pazarlıoğlu Yâkub Pasha, beylerbeyi of Ankara, and popularly called the Çilehâne Tekke. Amasya was one of the cities where the Halvetiyye was most widespread in Anatolia, and these tekkes in the Pîrler district stood at the center of that spread.
The succession of shaykhs that Özköse gives does not go beyond the sixteenth century; the names of es-Seyyid Mehmed Efendi, who was at the tekke in the eighteenth century, and of his son Ebûbekir Efendi are not in this short list. Hüsameddin's record is valuable in showing that the tekke lived on in the eighteenth century as well with a shaykhship passing from father to son. The tekke, which was later destroyed, had its waqfs pass into the hands of the Ministry of Education (Maarif) in 1897.
The Hızır Pasha Mosque and Its Quarter
The Hızır Pasha Mosque, where Ebûbekir Efendi served as preacher, was built in 1466 by Hayreddin Hızır Pasha, brother of Yörgüç Pasha, the lala (tutor) of Murad II. The mosque, originally a complex with a bath, madrasa and ablution fountain (şadırvan), today stands only as mosque and bath. It is one of the mosques with zaviyes and an inverted-T plan seen in early Ottoman architecture, with examples in Amasya also in the Bayezid Pasha and Yörgüç Pasha mosques. Because of the steep slope of the land its entrance is given from the east rather than the north, and the şadırvan was placed on this facade. The mosque is open for worship today in the Hızırpaşa quarter, which still bears its name, on the slope above the railway station.
A distinction must be noted here. In Amasya there was also a Hızır Pasha Tekke; according to Özköse this tekke was founded in 971 [1564] by Beylerbeyi Hızır Pasha, of the Yörgüçpaşazâdes, in the old Şamice quarter, on the west side of today's Gökmedrese Mosque, and burned down and disappeared in 1730. Hüsameddin's text clearly mentions Ebûbekir Efendi in connection with the preachership of the Hızır Pasha Mosque and the shaykhship of the Kuşbaz Tekke; it should not be confused with this tekke of similar name. Since the Kuşbaz Tekke is in the Pîrler district and the Hızır Pasha Mosque on the Hızırpaşa slope, it may be thought that the shaykh built a bond with the people as preacher in a quarter separate from his tekke, and that Hüsameddin's phrase "the kutub of the people of the Hızır Pasha quarter" comes from this preachership.
