Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • mahdûm: son
  • Bâb-ı âlî: the Sublime Porte, the seat and offices of the grand vizier
  • tefeyyüz: advancing, rising
  • tezkire-i sadr-ı âlî: the office of tezkireci to the grand vizier; a tezkire is a short official note, and the tezkireci is the clerk who prepares such notes
  • ibkâ: keeping in office
  • başmuhasebeci: the official at the head of the bureau that kept the state's revenue and expenditure accounts
  • mektubî-i sadr-ı âlî: head of the grand vizier's correspondence office, the grand vizier's mektupçu
  • hâcegân: the senior scribes of the Imperial Council

The Period of the Offices

Köprülü Mehmed Pasha was appointed to the grand vezirate on 26 Zilkade 1066 [15 September 1656] and died in Edirne on 7 Rebîülevvel 1072 [31 October 1661]. His son Köprülüzâde Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha was appointed grand vizier the next day, held the post for fifteen years and died on 26 Şaban 1087 [3 November 1676]. The year 1071 in the text falls in the last year of the first grand vizier, and 1086 in the last years of the second. The sequence of offices that Hüsameddin gives does not conflict with the terms of these two grand viziers.

The Chief Accountancy and the Rank of Hâcegân

The Başmuhasebe Kalemi, also called Muhâsebe-i Evvel, took shape in the early seventeenth century. The chief accountant supervised revenue and expenditure and was regarded as the head of all the financial bureaus. The word hâcegân is used for the senior scribes of the Imperial Council. In a list from the mid-eighteenth century the chief accountant, the mektupçu, the financial tezkireci, the grand vizier's kethüda and the reîsülküttâb are counted at this rank. Hüsameddin's description of the man as "one of the hâcegân of the Imperial Council" agrees with this definition.

His Father and His Brother

According to the entry "Sıdkı Mustafa Paşa-Kadızâde" in volume 11 of the book (p. 441–445), Mustafa Pasha was born in the Fethiye quarter of Amasya, the son of Ahmed Efendi, of a family of judges. He rose in the Imperial Council chancery, became reîsülküttâb in 1047 [1637-38], was appointed to that post four times in all, served as nişancı and as governor of Temeşvar, and was honoured with the rank of vizier in 1066 [1655-56]. When Köprülü Mehmed Pasha came to the grand vezirate he kept his position; in 1072 [1661-62] he resigned under Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha, returned to Istanbul and died in 1073 [1662-63]. Hüsameddin lists his sons as Ahmed Bey and Mehmed Emîn Bey. Since the name and the father's name agree, the subject of this entry must be the second son (inference).

The entry on his brother Ahmed Efendi (vol. 6, p. 169–170) reports that he became mektupçu to the grand vizier under Köprülü Mehmed Pasha and reîsülküttâb in the time of Fâzıl Ahmed Pasha, and that he died on the sixth day of Cemâziyelâhir 1079 [1668]. Thus the father and both sons are seen to have worked in the Council chancery.

Emîn Mehmed Çelebi Himself

The year of his death is not given in the text. No further information on him or his father was found in sources other than Hüsameddin's book.
