The Chair at the Sahn-ı Semân
According to the encyclopedia entry, the Sahn-ı Semân madrasas are the eight high-ranking madrasas completed in 1470 within the Fâtih Complex in Istanbul, four on each side of the mosque. The Tetimme madrasas behind them rank lower and prepare students for the Sahn. At the Sahn the works read concerned tafsir, hadith, fıkh, uṣūl al-fıkh, kalām and Arabic. In each madrasa one müderris who knew the introductory sciences and the rational and traditional sciences well was to serve, and muids were chosen to assist him. The text's phrase "while passing in turn through the ordinary madrasas, and while müderris of the Sahn-ı Semân" describes a müderris advancing in this graded structure. The date 1175 [1761-62] that Hüsameddin gives shows that the man had reached the Sahn rank at a young age.
His Father, Küçük Hâfız Mehmed Efendi
The annual narrative in the supplement to volume 4 of the book (p. 661) records that "Küçük Hâfız Mehmed Efendi of Amasya, one of the Istanbul müderrises" became judge of Amasya at the beginning of Zilkade 1181 [1768], with Hacı Servahdî Mustafa Efendi as his deputy. This man may be the father named in the entry (inference: the name and nickname agree, but it is not stated). If so, the father was still alive after his son's death in 1175.
Gaps in the Sources
The names of the madrasas where Emîn Mehmed Efendi taught, the cause of his death and the meaning of his father's title "vizier's inspector" are not explained in the book. No information on him or his father was found in sources other than the book.
