The Voyvodalık of Köprü

The Köprü in the entry is present-day Vezirköprü, which in the Ottoman period was a district (kaza) attached to the sanjak of Amasya and in 1925 was attached to Samsun. Like Hacı Kâsımzâde İbrâhim Ağa, described in entry 233 of this volume, Danacıoğlu İbrâhim Ağa comes from the notables of the township, rises by attaching himself to an ayan, and becomes voyvoda of Köprü after taking part in war and gaining fame. Read together, the two entries show that at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth century the voyvodalık of Köprü changed hands among a few ayan families of the township.

Yücel Özkaya notes that officials who collected taxes as deputies of the sanjak governor were sometimes also called voyvoda, and that in the eighteenth century such posts largely passed into the hands of local dynasties. Özcan Mert likewise writes that the local dynasties seen in documents as voyvoda, mütesellim and muhassıl were at the same time called ayan. That Danacıoğlu İbrâhim Ağa's voyvodalık passed after his death to his brother Hacı Mehmed Emîn Ağa is an example of this post being kept within the family.

The text does not state which Russian war is meant. In the reign of Selim III a state of war with Russia arose again in 1806; this is probably the war İbrâhim Ağa took part in before his death around 1235, but this is an inference. No information was found in other sources about Ulu Ya'kûbzâde Hacı Ömer Bey, to whom İbrâhim Ağa attached himself, his father Hacı Ahmed Ağa, or his brother Hacı Mehmed Emîn Ağa.
