In Modern English

He is from Hacıköy. He is the son of Hacı İsmâil Efendi, mufti of Gümüş. He completed his studies with his father and, in Amasya, with Payaslı Hacı Mehmed Efendi, and became a ders-i âm (a madrasa professor who gave public lectures); in 1224 [1809-10] he became professor at his father's madrasa and then a kadı. He served as kadı in Gümüş, Mecidözü and other townships and died in 1241 [1825-26]. He was a learned and pious man.

Hacıköy and Gümüş

"Hacıköy" in the entry is the center of today's Gümüşhacıköy district; "Gümüş" is the town of Gümüş, attached to the district, which took its name from the old silver mines. In Ottoman state yearbooks the region long appears under the name "Maden-i Sim Kazası" (the silver-mine district); the name "Gümüşhacıköy" as a district name is first seen in the state yearbook of 1302 [1885]. Hüsameddin's saying "mufti of Gümüş" and "kadı of Gümüş" is consistent with the name of this mining district. The Halîliye Madrasa in the town of Gümüş was built between 1413 and 1415 and is known as a structure whose domed courtyard has no other example apart from the Lala Şahin Pasha Madrasa in Bursa. Since the text does not clearly state of which madrasa his father İsmâil Efendi was owner or professor, it is not known whether "his father's madrasa" is the Halîliye.

His Teacher Payaslı Hacı Mehmed Efendi

İbrâhim Efendi's teacher in Amasya, Payaslı Hacı Mehmed Efendi, is a name that appears frequently in Hüsameddin's book. In the entry of his son Abdülhalîm Efendi he is called "esbak Amasya müftüsü" (former mufti of Amasya). That the same teacher also trained Fetvâcızâde İbrâhim Efendi and Caniklizâde Abdülkâdir Efendi shows that in the first quarter of the nineteenth century the men of learning of the surrounding townships gathered around a few great teachers in Amasya. İbrâhim Efendi's teaching first at his father's madrasa and then serving as kadı in nearby townships such as Gümüş and Mecidözü follows the typical path of provincial scholars who moved from professorship to the kadılık.
