In Modern English

He was the son of Seyyid Mehmed of Amasya, one of the kadıs; Seyyid Mehmed was the son of Seyyid Şerîf Mehmed Efendi, who was the son of Zanalı Seyyid Hacı Ahmed Efendi. He studied in Istanbul and became a ders-i âm. Later, when his relative Şerîf Mehmed Pasha was still an "Efendi", he became a tutor in his household, and through his support became a madrasa professor and then a kadı. Dismissed from the kadılık of Sivas and living in Amasya, he died in early 1228 [January-February 1813]. He was among the senior kadıs of the devriye mevleviyet. His son Seyyid Şerîf Mehmed Efendi also died, in 1256 [1840-41], while deputy judge in the townships.

The Kadılık of Sivas and the Devriye Mevleviyet

That Hüsameddin counts the subject of the entry among the "kibâr-ı mevâlî-i devriyye" shows the rank he reached in the ilmiye organization. In the Ottoman ilmiye system the judgeships of large cities were called mevleviyet. In terms of pay these judgeships were divided into two groups, of 300 and 500 akçe daily; the 300-akçe judgeships were the lowest-ranking mevleviyets and were later called "devriye mevleviyets". In order of prestige the devriye mevleviyets were followed by the mahreç mevleviyets, the mevleviyets of the bilâd-ı hamse (the five great cities) and the Haremeyn mevleviyets. Among the cities that passed into the status of devriye mevleviyet were Adana, Antep, Baghdad, Belgrade, Bosnia, Diyarbekir, Erzurum, Konya, Kütahya and Sofia, together with Sivas. Kadıs who had served for a time in these cities received, after being dismissed, the grade of mahreç mevleviyet and waited their turn.

Accordingly, Şerîfzâde İbrâhim Efendi rose from township judgeships to a devriye mevleviyet such as Sivas, and, dismissed when his term ended, returned to his hometown Amasya as a mevleviyet kadı and lived there. His son Şerîf Mehmed Efendi, it appears, stayed at the level of township deputy judge.

His Relative Şerîf Mehmed Pasha

Who Şerîf Mehmed Pasha was, who trained the subject of the entry and helped him rise to professorship and the kadılık, is not explained by Hüsameddin. The phrase "in his efendihood" suggests that he first served in the scribal service with the title "efendi" and then rose to pashahood. Among the authors of reform memoranda of the Nizâm-ı Cedîd era there is a statesman called "Defterdar Mehmed Şerif Bey" or "Mehmed Şerif Efendi"; according to Hakan Erdem, this person wrote a memorandum that speaks of winter soldiers and in April 1793 yielded the post of chief treasurer to Amasyalızâde Hacı İbrâhim Efendi. Whether this Mehmed Şerif Efendi is the relative Şerîf Mehmed Pasha whom Hüsameddin mentions could not be determined from the sources read; similarity of name alone is not enough to establish a link.

The family's "Zanalı" nisba recalls Zanalızâde Seyyid Mustafa Efendi, known as the "Köşe Kadısı", who appears in entry 228 of this volume. That the families in both entries were in the kadı profession suggests that the Zanalızades were a family who carried on the ilmiye profession in Amasya for generations; however, the kinship between the two branches is not stated explicitly by Hüsameddin. No information was found in other sources about the subject of the entry and his family.
