In Modern English

He was the son of Hasan of Amasya. Having learned learning and the scribal craft, he became divan scribe of the former grand vizier Koca Mehmed Pasha, son of Hızır Dânişmend. When Sultan Murad II was governor in Amasya he served him in the scribal office. During the Pasha's grand vizierate he became one of the men of the imperial divan and one of the hâcegân; when the Pasha was dismissed and removed in 841 [1437-38] he came to Amasya. Then he died.

He was one of the witnesses of Koca Mehmed Pasha's waqf deed, a scribe with fine handwriting, a poet, a man of letters and of culture.

His sons Tâhir and Muhyiddin Mehmed Çelebi were called "İbrîzâde." Because the wits of the time called him "İbrî," they became famous as İbrîzâdes. Muhyiddin Mehmed Çelebi, son of Tâhir Çelebi, and Abdurrahman Çelebi, son of Muhyiddin Çelebi, are among the well-known scholars.

Koca Mehmed Pasha

İbrî İbrâhim Çelebi's master was Koca Mehmed Nizâmüddin Pasha, one of the grand viziers of the reign of Murad II. In the sources he is also called Dânişmendoğlu, Dânişmendzâde Mehmed Pasha or Amasyalı Koca Mehmed Pasha. He was born in Osmancık; since Osmancık was then attached to the sanjak of Amasya, some works call him a man of Amasya, and it is also recorded that one of his wives was Cihan Hatun, daughter of Kutlu Pasha, one of the notables of Amasya. While Çelebi Mehmed was in Amasya he became beylerbeyi of Anatolia, on 28 August 1429 he was raised to the grand vizierate, and in 1438 he yielded his place to Çandarlı Halil Pasha. After his dismissal he settled in Osmancık and died there in 1439; his grave is in the garden of the mosque that bears his name.

The date of dismissal, 841, given by Hüsameddin, falls between July 1437 and July 1438 and agrees with the information that the Pasha left the grand vizierate in 1438. On the other hand, the sources differ on the name of the Pasha's father: Hüsameddin calls him "son of Hızır Dânişmend"; in some sources it is written that his father was Osmancıklı İmamzâde Halil Pasha, who served as grand vizier between 1406 and 1413.

At this point a confusion also needs to be pointed out. In Amasya there is another statesman known as "Mehmed Pasha, son of Hızır Pasha." This Mehmed Pasha was the son of Hızır Pasha, brother of Yörgüç Pasha; in the time of Bayezid II he became lala to Prince Ahmed, had a madrasa and a hankah built in Amasya, had a waqf deed drawn up dated 896 [1491], and died in Amasya in 904 [1498]. The Koca Mehmed Pasha whom Hüsameddin speaks of, who served as grand vizier in the reign of Murad II and was dismissed in 841, lived more than half a century before him. The waqf deed of which İbrî İbrâhim Çelebi was among the witnesses belongs, according to Hüsameddin's account, to this first Mehmed Pasha.

The İbrîzâdes

The name İbrîzâde, which comes from İbrâhim Çelebi's nickname, lived on through generations as one of the scholarly families of Amasya. In another volume of his work Hüsameddin tells of Hasan Çelebi, son of Mevlânâ İbrîzâde Muhyiddin Mehmed Çelebi, whom he counts among the "great among the learned." Hasan Çelebi took lessons from his father and other scholars of the time and became a madrasa professor; after teaching for years he became known as professor of the Halifet Gazi Madrasa, then became preacher (hatib) and afterward imam of the Sultan Bayezid Mosque, was called "Hatîb Çelebi," and died in 915 [1509-10]. Hüsameddin presents him as a scholar, virtuous, a hâfız of the Qur'an and an imam with a beautiful voice. Since two different Muhyiddin Mehmed Çelebis appear in the text, it is not certain which of them Hasan Çelebi was the son of; but in either case this information shows that the descendants of İbrî İbrâhim Çelebi held posts in the leading madrasas and mosques of Amasya in the time of Bayezid II.

Hüsameddin does not explain the meaning of the nickname "İbrî"; he says only that it was a name given by the wits of the time. Whether a sample of İbrâhim Çelebi's poems has survived to the present, and the lives of Tâhir Çelebi and his grandson Abdurrahman Çelebi, found no information in other sources.
