In Modern English
He was the son of el-Hâc Ali Ağa, one of the notables of the Çeribaşı quarter; el-Hâc Ali Ağa was the son of el-Hâc Hasan Ağa, who was in turn the son of el-Hâc Ali Ağa. When his father died he became steward of his grandfather's mosque waqf. His stewardship was long. He was a member of the councils of the hajjis and the ayan, and died in 1213 [1798-99].

The Family and Its Setting
The text does not explain the epithet "Mütevellîzâde." One might think it comes from the family serving as stewards of a mosque's waqf over generations; this is an inference. The lineage is as follows: İlyâs Ağa was the son of el-Hâc Ali Ağa; el-Hâc Ali Ağa was the son of el-Hâc Hasan Ağa; and el-Hâc Hasan Ağa was the son of another el-Hâc Ali Ağa.
The father of Silâhdâr İlyâs Ağa, mentioned in the next entry (294), Mütevellîzâde el-Hâc Mehmed Ağa, is likewise shown as the son of "el-Hâc Hasan Ağa bin el-Hâc Ali Ağa." Reading the two lineages together, the fathers of these two İlyâs Ağas were brothers and the two men were cousins. The text does not say this openly; it is an inference drawn by comparing the names in the two entries.
An entry on the Beyazıt Mosque in Amasya tells that in 1197 [1782-83] a benefactor named Hacı Ali Ağa had taps and a water-heating place built on the river side of the mosque so that ablutions could be made with warm water in winter. That the names are the same does not show that this man was related to the family of the Çeribaşı quarter; the source consulted draws no such link.
Searches on the present state of the Çeribaşı quarter and on the name of the mosque the family administered turned up no information for Amasya; the results concerned a mosque of the same name in Istanbul. For this reason it could not be verified which building the waqf belonged to.
