In Modern English

He was the son of es-Seyyid Mehmed Efendi, one of the scholars of Amasya; Mehmed Efendi was the son of Mufti el-Hâc Ahmed Efendi, who was in turn the son of el-Hâc İlyâs Ağa. After completing his studies in Amasya he became steward of his grandfather's waqf and müderris (madrasa professor) at his madrasa, and died around 1176 [1762-63]. His uncle es-Seyyid Abdülbâki Efendi was of the mevâlî.

  • es-Seyyid: a title given to descendants of the Prophet
  • ceddî: of his grandfather

On Reading the Text

The text gives a lineage of three generations: İlyâs Ağa, his son Mufti Ahmed Efendi, and the latter's son es-Seyyid Mehmed Efendi. According to the closing word "mahdûmudur" of the sentence, the İlyâs Efendi of the heading is the son of this Mehmed Efendi. The phrase "ceddînin vakfı" can be understood as the waqf of İlyâs Efendi's grandfather, Mufti Ahmed Efendi; but the text does not state the name or nature of the waqf, so this is an inference.

The same page also contains a Müftîzâde İlyâs Efendi from Merzifon (entry 291). Hüsameddin draws no kinship between the two, and no such link appears in the sources consulted.

Searches on the Müftîzâde Madrasa, this waqf, Seyyid Abdülbâki Efendi and Mufti Ahmed Efendi turned up no information. For this reason the location of the madrasa, the founding of the waqf and details of these men's lives could not be verified.
