Encyclopedia · History of Amasya, Volume 7, p. 346 • Edited by: Prof. Dr. Safi ARPAGUŞ- Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hakkı TURABİ
In Modern English
He was the son of Mütevellîzâde Hacı Mehmed Çelebi, the city steward (kethüdâ) of Amasya; Mehmed Çelebi was the son of İsa Çelebi, and İsa Çelebi the son of Ali Ağa. He is the nephew, his brother's son, of Hacı İlyâs Ağa above. When his uncle was martyred he became trustee of the Çeribaşı waqf; in 1102 [1690-91] he became a member of the council of notables (meclîs-i a'yân) and died afterwards. His brother is Hacı Ali Ağa.
Notes and Research
Old Words in the Text
- şehir kethüdâsı: a post in the city of Amasya; kethüdâ means steward
- birâderzâde: brother's son
- şehâdet: martyrdom
- meclîs-i a'yân: council of notables; the a'yân were the leading and influential persons of a city
- a'zâ: members
Uncle and Nephew
The text presents this man as the brother's son of Hacı İlyâs Ağa, mentioned in the preceding entry (no. 288), who was martyred at Candia in 1081. Thus İlyâs Ağa's son, Mufti Ahmed Efendi, and the subject of this entry are cousins. The name "Zanbak Dedezâde" appears in the entry heading, and it distinguishes this İlyâs Ağa, who bears the same name as his uncle, from the İlyâs Ağa of the preceding entry. To whom the name "Zanbak Dede" belongs is not explained in the entry, and it was not found elsewhere.
An article on the Halveti lodges writes that in place of the madrasa that burned in 1730, "Mütevellîzâde Hacı Ali Ağa" had a Halveti lodge built. The Hacı Ali Ağa named as brother at the end of this entry may be the same person; the names and the family name match, but since the article does not give the man's lineage this is an inference.
The Council of Notables and the Stewardship
Hüsameddin writes that Mufti Ahmed Efendi became head of the notables (başayan) by consensus of the notables in 1119 [1707-08]; this record, together with the date 1102 in this entry, shows that being a notable was an office in Amasya that lasted for decades. The job description of the city stewardship, who appointed to it, and how many years it lasted are not in this entry; no source explaining them could be found.
No information on this Hacı İlyâs Ağa was found in other sources.
