The Atabeyzâdes

The Atabeg Gâzi of the text is Nâsıreddîn Ahmed Atabey, who built the madrasa known in Amasya as the Atabey Madrasa. According to one study, Nâsıreddîn Ahmed was atabey of the Seljuk Sultan Gıyâseddin Mesud the Second and of his son Gazi Çelebi Tâceddîn Altunbaş, and served as governor of Amasya for five years between 1322 and 1327. He had the madrasa built and endowed all his land and property to it. His descendants are called Atabeyzâdes; the family won a respected place among the people of Amasya and was among those who acted prudently in the city's acceptance of Ottoman rule. The family, which also held important posts in the Ottoman period, continued in two branches: the most famous was the Yörgüç Pasha branch, the second that of his brother Hızır Pasha. In the fifteenth century the post of tutor to princes had become particular to the Atabeyzâdes.

This picture agrees with Hüsameddin's record: an ancestor who built a madrasa in Amasya and endowed his property, with his descendants serving as trustees of that endowment. According to Hüsameddin, İlyâs Bey died after 770 [1368-69]; this is a fitting date for a grandson of Nâsıreddîn Ahmed, who was governor between 1322 and 1327. However, the summary of the article gives these dates without citing Hüsameddin; because the full article could not be read, where İlyâs Bey and his father Hızır Bey stand in the family has not been verified. The names Ömer and Süleyman el-Atâlî that Hüsameddin mentions also do not appear in the sources read.

No information was found in the sources read on the present state of the Atabey Madrasa or on İlyâs Bey's sons Hızır and Abdî Bey.
