What the Text Says and Does Not Say

Apart from the genealogy, the entry gives only two pieces of information: that he was one of the beys of Çelebi Sultan Mehmed and that he died around 820. The subject of the entry is the person who appears in the title as İlyas Bey; his father is Hamza Bey, his grandfather Hacı İlyas Bey, and his great-grandfather Hacı Nevruz Bey.

The Beys of Amasya in Çelebi Mehmed's Time

Mehmed Çelebi had been sent as governor to the Rum province, which covered Amasya, Tokat, Sivas and Ankara, in Şevval 801 [June 1399]. After the Battle of Ankara in 1402 he accepted Timur's sovereignty and maintained his hold around Tokat and Amasya. It appears that a settlement was reached by which he confirmed the property rights, in their lands, of the local beys who accepted his sovereignty. Becoming sole sultan in 1413, Mehmed Çelebi remained on the throne until 1421. The people Hüsameddin calls "the beys of Çelebi Sultan Mehmed Khan" may have served at any point in this long span; the text does not say in which years or in what office he served.

The article on Murad II describes developments on the Amasya frontier between 820 and 824 [1417-1421]. According to the account, Prince Murad and his new atabey, Hamza Bey, beylerbeyi of Rum, took Samsun from the İsfendiyaroğlu. The sources do not say whether this Hamza Bey is the same as the Hamza Bey in the entry. There is no clue beyond the same name appearing in the same period, so the two cannot be identified.

No further information was found in the sources read on Hacı Nevruz Bey, Hacı İlyas Bey, Hamza Bey, or İlyas Bey, the subject of the entry.
