Baba İlyas and His Line

Baba İlyâs-ı Horasânî was the Turkmen sheikh who led the Babai revolt of 1240. In the time of Alâeddin Keykubad the First he settled in the village of Çat (today İlyas) near Amasya and, as a Vefâî sheikh in the lodge he founded there, gave instruction among the Turkmens of the area. The revolt was begun in 1240 at Kefersud by his deputy Baba İshak; Baba İlyas himself was besieged and captured by Seljuk forces in Amasya and executed. After the movement was suppressed, his surviving disciples formed the current known as Babaîlik.

Among Baba İlyas's descendants the names of Muhlis Pasha, Âşık Pasha and Elvan Çelebi are mentioned; it is noted that Elvan Çelebi, son of Âşık Pasha, was of Baba İlyas's line and of the same Vefâî tradition. After Baba İlyas's lodge, the most important center of the Vefâî order was Elvan Çelebi's lodge, and the historian Âşıkpaşazâde, who came from this line, also lived there. The Şemseddîn Mahmûd et-Tuğrâî branch that Hüsameddin mentions does not appear in these sources; for this reason the genealogical link in the text could not be verified.

No information was found in the sources read on Nevrûz Bey's arrival from Egypt, his relationship with Nûreddîn Kutlu Bey, the origin of the Hacı İlyâs Quarter, or its present state. The quarter's connection with Nevrûz Bey rests solely on Hüsameddin's record.
