In Modern English

He was the son of Abdullah Bey, one of the notables of Amasya; Abdullah Bey was the son of Ali Bey, and Ali Bey was the son of Yörgüç Pasha. At first he was among the commanders in the retinue of Prince Sultan Ahmed. In 913 [1507-08], because of the influence and pressure of the Acem (the Iranians), he went to Trabzon and took refuge with Sultan Selim Khan.

Because he had served the aforementioned sovereign selflessly and loyally in his princely days, he became bey of Trabzon when Selim ascended the throne in 918 [1512-13]. In 920 [1514-15] he was present with the troops of his province at the Battle of Çaldıran and died as a martyr. He was one of the great commanders.

Prince Selim in Trabzon

Yavuz Sultan Selim was born in Amasya and spent an important part of his princely years in the sanjak of Trabzon. There he followed developments along the frontier closely, above all the activities of Shah Ismail, and wrote reports to the center. In 1507 he marched on Erzincan and entered the city, and then scattered a force of ten thousand men sent by Shah Ismail in the vicinity of Erzincan. His campaign against the Georgian king in 914 [1508] was received with praise by his father. Seeing in these years that his elder brother Ahmed in Amasya was emerging as the strongest candidate for the throne, Selim did not accept the situation and entered the struggle for the throne. According to Hüsameddin, İshak Bey's move from Amasya to Trabzon in 913 was because of Acem pressure; the sources read give no other reason for this move.

Accession and Çaldıran

Bayezid II died on 25 Rebîülevvel 918 [10 June 1512]; by then Selim had come to the throne. The Battle of Çaldıran was fought between Selim and Shah Ismail on 23 August 1514. The Ottoman army had come a distance of about two thousand five hundred kilometers and was tired; on the right wing stood the Anatolian and Karaman troops under the command of the Beylerbeyi of Anatolia, Hadım Sinan Pasha. After the victory Selim entered Tabriz. The Ottoman losses are reported to have included the beylerbeyi of Rumeli and ten sanjak beys; İshak Bey's name does not appear in the source, but the date 920 given by Hüsameddin matches the date of Çaldıran.

Yörgüç Pasha and His Line

Yörgüç Pasha was the lala of Murad II and beylerbeyi of Rum; he died in Zilhicce 845 [April-May 1442] and was buried in the tomb of his mosque in Amasya. He had a mosque, a madrasa, an imaret and two hamams built in Amasya. According to its inscription, his mosque was built in 834 [1430]. The sources list his sons Hızır, Yûnus and Mustafa, and a son named Molla Îsâ; Ali Bey and his son Abdullah Bey are not mentioned. For this reason the link between the family Hüsameddin calls "Yörgüç Paşazâde" and the beylerbeyi of Rum, Yörgüç Pasha, could not be verified.

The Course of the Battle of Çaldıran

The battle began with an attack by forty thousand elite cavalry under the Shah's command. The Beylerbeyi of Anatolia, Sinan Pasha, quickly pulled his troops back as planned and brought the Safavid cavalry face to face with the Ottoman artillery; when the guns opened fire all at once, this wing of the Shiite army was shattered. After the victory Selim entered Tabriz on 5 September, stayed there about a week, and left taking the Shah's treasures and some craftsmen. He spent the winter in Amasya; there the Janissaries pressed to return to Istanbul and on 22 February 1515 plundered the houses of Pîrî Mehmed Pasha, who had been made third vizier, and of the sultan's tutor Halîmî Çelebi.
