The Descent of Koç Hüseyin Bey
The entry presents İshak Bey through his father Koç Hüseyin Bey; in the ninth volume Hüsameddin wrote a separate entry for Koç Hüseyin Bey himself. According to it, Koç Hüseyin Bey was the son of Ali Bey and one of the emirs of Amasya in the time of Hacı Şadgeldi Paşa. After Şadgeldi he submitted to Sultan Murad Hünkâr and became one of the notables, proved himself in all the wars of Yıldırım Bayezid, and was for a time emir of Canik and then of Tokat. In 804 [1401-02] he also served and showed courage in the war against Timur, remained with Çelebi Sultan Mehmed and served him loyally until his independence. In 819 [1416-17] he was killed in the war with Prince Mustafa together with the grand vizier Hacı Halil Paşa. His sons are Yûsuf, İshak and Koçî Beys; it is written that İshak's sons Hüseyin and Mehmed were also well known.
In the third volume, however, a different name appears as Hüseyin Bey's father. There it is told that Koç Hüseyin Bey, the younger son of Osman Paşa, emir of Develü Karahisarı, stayed in Amasya at the side of Hacı Şadgeldi Paşa. In the same volume it is written that the emir of Amasya, Ahmed Bey, "appointed Timurhanoğlu Koç Hüseyin Bey as emir of Çorum". Thus both Ali Bey and Osman Paşa are named as Koç Hüseyin Bey's father; Hüsameddin does not explain the difference. The book also tells that the Devecioğlu family was an ally of Şadgeldi: Şadgeldi acted together with Devecioğlu Hüseyin Bey in the siege of the fortress of Osmancık and made use of the old enmity between Devecioğlu Timur Han and the emirs of Osmancık and Çorum.
The Battle of Varna and Sivas
The Battle of Varna was fought on 10 November 1444 between the Ottoman army under Murad II and the Crusader army of the Polish-Hungarian king Władysław and Hunyadi, and ended in an Ottoman victory. Before the battle, after making peace with the Karamanids in August 1444, Murad II had handed the throne to his son Mehmed II, but was recalled to lead the army when the Crusade was prepared. Hüsameddin's entry "Mehmed Paşa" in the third volume counts among the men of Amasya who fell as martyrs in this battle İsa Beyzâde İshak, the conqueror of Bosnia, Şâdî Beyzâde Burâk Bey, and Yörgüç Paşazâde Hızır and Mustafa Beys. Koçoğlu İshak Bey is not on this list; indeed the entry writes that he died as bey of Sivas. No further detail on what he did in the battle is found in the book.
For İshak Bey's son Hüseyin Paşa Hüsameddin wrote a separate entry in the ninth volume. According to it Hüseyin Paşa took part in many wars as alaybeyi of Amasya, became mirliva through his service in the conquest of Istanbul in 857 [1452-53], then, as beylerbeyi of Ankara and Sivas, defended the frontier of Amasya against the attacks of Uzun Hasan, and died in 878 [1473] after showing himself in the war with Uzun Hasan. Hüseyin Paşa's son is Cizyedâr Muhyiddîn Mehmed Bey. Emîr Bey, son of İshak's brother Yûsuf, is called "Koçîzâde" and appears in 897 [1491-92] with the title "Fahrü'l-ümerâi'l-kibâr"; Cüneyd Bey, son of Koçî Bey, died in 905 [1499-1500] in the war of Euboea. In Hüsameddin's account the Koçoğulları thus appear as an Amasya family that produced Ottoman sanjak governors and beylerbeyis for at least four generations.
Differences in the Family Records
In this entry in the seventh volume the wife of İshak Bey is written as "Sekine Hatun binti Seyyid Bey". In the ninth volume Sekine Hatun, as mother of his son Mehmed, is said to be the "daughter of Cüneyd Bey"; in the tenth volume Sekine Hatun is mentioned as "daughter of Seydî Ahmed Çelebi bin Abdulhay Çelebi and wife of Koçoğlu İshak Bey", and it is stated that she endowed the farm she inherited from her husband and died after 860. That the same woman has three different fathers may come from the records resting on different documents or from Hüsameddin's notes having been left uncorrected; the book does not explain it. The death of Mehmed Bey is likewise given as 856 in one place and 857 here.
No information on Koçoğlu İshak Bey and his family was found in sources other than Hüsameddin's book. Nothing could be found in a reliable source on Devecioğlu Hüsâmeddîn Timur Han, Osman Paşa or Ali Bey either.
