Yörgüç Pasha and His Line
Yörgüç Pasha, at the head of the line, is the man whom Çelebi Sultan Mehmed assigned as lala (tutor) to his son Prince Murad when he sent him to Amasya in 1414 with the governorship of the province of Rum. When Murad II took the throne he appointed him beylerbeyi of Rum in 1423. Yörgüç Pasha died in Zilhicce 845 [April-May 1442] and was buried in the tomb of the mosque he had built in Amasya. His mosque in Amasya was built in 1428 and still stands today; it is one of the inverted-T mosques of Amasya, with hewn stone in its walls and red and white marble in its arches. From the endowment deeds and the survey registers it is understood that he also had a madrasa, a soup kitchen and two baths built in Amasya.
As Yörgüç Pasha's children, the sources count his sons Hızır, Yûnus and Mustafa and his two daughters Sitti and Hundi Hatun; Hızır and Mustafa Beys are known to have fallen as martyrs at the Battle of Varna. It is also stated that he had another son, Molla Îsâ. The son Hüsameddin calls "Ali Bey" is not on this list; whether the list is incomplete or whether Ali Bey was known by another name is not known.
The Battle of Çaldıran
The Battle of Çaldıran is the pitched battle fought on 23 August 1514 between Yavuz Sultan Selim and the Safavid ruler Shah Ismail. The Ottomans won a decisive victory, but the beylerbeyi of Rumeli and ten sanjak governors lost their lives. Whether İskender Bey, whom Hüsameddin names as sanjak governor of Niğde, was one of these ten sanjak governors could not be verified in the sources consulted. Seydî Ali Bey, who died in the same year and the same battle, was also from Amasya (see the entry İsfendiyâr Bey, Bektemuroğlu); this suggests that many people from the noble families of Amasya took part in the battle, but this is an inference.
Points to Note
The last sentence in the text ("This one was called İskender Pasha") is not clear as to whom it belongs. Since the son Mustafa Bey is mentioned just before, it may belong to him; since the heading of the entry points to İskender Bey, the sentence is left in the translation as it stands. No other source was found that would confirm the chain Abdî Bey, Ali Bey, İskender Bey that Hüsameddin gives.
