The Battle of Çaldıran

The battle in which Seydî Ali Bey died was the pitched battle fought on the plain of Çaldıran on 23 August 1514 between Yavuz Sultan Selim and the Safavid ruler Shah Ismail. The Ottoman army advanced by way of Sivas, two armies close in size met, the battle began with an attack by Shah Ismail's cavalry, and, with the effect of the Ottoman artillery, it ended in a decisive Ottoman victory. Many soldiers died on both sides; of the Ottomans, the beylerbeyi of Rumeli and ten sanjak governors lost their lives. After the battle, while he was in Amasya, Yavuz Selim did not receive Shah Ismail's embassy. Whether Seydî Ali Bey was among these ten sanjak governors could not be verified in the sources consulted.

Ali Pasha, Beylerbeyi of Lahsâ and Basra

Lahsâ is an oasis region on the shore of the Persian Gulf. When the Portuguese threat appeared, the Ottomans took the region in 1547 and attached it to the beylerbeylik of Basra; Lahsâ probably became a separate beylerbeylik after 1553. To the beylerbeylik, people who had earlier served as governors in Baghdad and Syria were at first appointed. The person Hüsameddin calls "Ali Pasha, beylerbeyi of Lahsâ and Basra" we could not find by name in the source we examined. There is no contradiction in dates: the Ottoman takeover of Lahsâ is 1547, and the year 967 [1559-60], in which according to Hüsameddin the father died, may coincide with this term of office.

Points to Note

No other source was found that would confirm the line of descent beginning from Baytemur or the name "Bektemuroğlu". The phrase "967 hudûdunda" in the text shows that the author is not sure of the year of death. About İsfendiyâr Bey himself, named in the heading of the entry, no record was found in other sources either; for this reason, what Hüsameddin relates is the only source of information about this person.
