Pir İlyas and the Halveti Order in Amasya

One of the pioneers who brought the Halveti order into Anatolia was Pir İlyas of Amasya. The first lodge in Amasya devoted to the Halveti order was the Gümüşlüoğlu Lodge, known as Tâciye. Pir İlyas, who returned to Amasya in 1406 after the death of Timur, brought the Halveti way to the city; his relative Hâce Celal Çelebi had this lodge built a year after the sheikh's arrival. The lodge's soup kitchen sheltered many refugees in those years. The tomb of Pir İlyas, where his son-in-law Pir Abdurrahman Çelebi and his grandson Pir Hayrettin Hızır Çelebi also lie, is known as the "Tomb of the Pirs" or "Upper Pirs" and is today one of the most visited places in the city. This is the place Hüsameddin describes as "the precinct of the tomb of Hazret-i Pir".

The Period Hüsameddin Describes

Among the sheikhs of the Gümüşlüoğlu Lodge, Abdurrahim Efendi is mentioned in 1723. After this sheikh's death the sheikhship and trusteeship of the lodge went to the renowned tomb keeper İsmâil Efendi. Because Saraylı Fatma Hanım admired this man greatly, on her advice İsmâil Efendi had a fine madrasa built in 1740 in place of the Gümüşlüoğlu Lodge and arranged its endowments. When İsmâil Efendi died in 1765, the keepership of the tomb of the Pir and the trusteeship of the Fatıma Madrasa were separated. The years 1740 and 1765 fit the dates Hüsameddin gives, 1153 [1740-41] and 1179 [1765-66]; it is highly likely that this İsmâil Efendi is the same man as Ebeoğlu, but the source does not mention the name "Ebeoğlu".

The point on which the accounts differ is who built the madrasa. Hüsameddin writes that Fatma Hatun had it built; the study states that İsmâil Efendi built it on Fatma Hanım's advice. The two records may be describing from different sides a building that came about through a lady's encouragement and support and İsmâil Efendi's own hand; the texts do not say this explicitly.
