Notes and Research

Hacıköyü and the Madrasa
The Hacıköyü of the text is the Hacıköy part of present-day Gümüşhacıköy. Gümüşhacıköy came into being through the merging of two settlements, Gümüş and Hacıköy, and takes its name from the silver mines. The seat of the district was moved from Gümüş to Hacıköy in 1882-1883, and after 1883 the settlement was called Gümüşhacıköy. The year 1241 [1825-26], when İsmail Efendi went to Hacıköyü, falls before this merger.
In the first volume Hüsameddin writes that the scholar Hacı İsmail Efendi, who came from Hacıköyü, had a madrasa with seven cells and a classroom built beside the Köprülü Mosque in 1118 [1706-07], together with a mosque, a school, and his own tomb next to the mosque. The "Hacı İsmail Efendi Madrasa" of the text is this madrasa. In the same section the sequence of its müderrises is given: first the founder himself, then his son Hâfız Osman Efendi, then the district mufti Hacı Ali Efendi, the son of Ankaralı Abdullah Efendi, then Darendelizâde İsmail Hakkı Efendi, who became mufti in his place, and then his son Hâfız Mustafa Tevfik Efendi. The name of İsmail Efendi of Çorum does not appear in this sequence; the appointment of 1244 [1828-29] in the seventh volume is not seen in the list in the first volume, and Hüsameddin's texts do not explain this difference between the two accounts. The change in the list is tied to 1245 [1829-30]; İsmail Efendi's appointment came one year before. This suggests either that he held a short term as müderris not named in the list or that the dates of the two accounts are one year apart; this is an inference.
Another madrasa in Gümüşhacıköy, the Haliliye (Hacı Halil Pasha) Madrasa, was built in 1413-1415 and does not appear to have any connection with the madrasa in the text.
No information about İsmail Efendi of Çorum himself was found in other sources.
