In Modern English
He is from Amasya. He is the son of Mehmed Ağa, famous as Ebuloğlu, who was the son of İbrahim Ağa and grandson of Ebü'l-Kâsım Efendi, that is, of Hacı Mehmed Ağa son of İsmâil. He too was known as Ebuloğlu, and he learned the various scripts from the renowned calligrapher Maydonozcuzâde İbrahim Zühdü Efendi.
Afterward, teaching calligraphy on one side, he became renowned as a finance clerk on the other. In 1238 [1822-23] he became dîvân efendisi and, managing the writing affairs of the mutasarrıfs and mütesellims of Amasya, he served as adviser to the mütesellims.
In 1254 [1838-39], in the First Doctor Incident, he was dismissed, and in 1256 [1840-41] he became dîvân efendisi for the second time. In 1262 [1846], in the Second Doctor Incident, he went into hiding and died at the beginning of 1263 [1846-47]. He was intelligent, prudent, fond of learning, a renowned scribe and calligrapher. His writings circulated from hand to hand for a long time. He signed his writings "İsmâil bin Mehmed el-Amâsî."

The Amâsî Nisba in the Signature
The signature "el-Amâsî" used by İsmâil is a nisba meaning "of Amasya." In the sources another Amasya calligrapher with the same nisba, Abdullah Amâsî, is mentioned as a relative and probably a student of the renowned Amasya calligrapher Sheikh Hamdullah Efendi (d. 1520). This long past of Amasya in the art of writing provides a frame for understanding the calligraphy of İsmâil of the Ebuloğlu family; but İsmâil's direct link to that circle is not documented.
The Doctor Incidents and His Teacher
No information was found in other sources about the First and Second Doctor Incidents mentioned in the text, about his teacher Maydonozcuzâde İbrahim Zühdü Efendi, or about İsmâil of the Ebuloğlu family. In the text's line of descent the name Mehmed Ağa appears twice, and the structure of the sentence does not show exactly which Mehmed Ağa is İsmâil's father.
