The Abolition of the Janissaries and the New Army
The Janissary Corps was abolished by decree on 17 June 1826, and the same decree announced that a new army in the European manner, the Asâkir-i Mansûre-i Muhammediye, would be formed. According to its regulation the army was to number 12,000 men, divided into eight tertips of 1,500 each. What Hüsameddin calls the "Nizam Corps" is most likely this new army; this matching is an inference. According to the book's footnote, İsmâil appears in the Istanbul "Cavalry Register" in 1244 [1828-29] as Köprülüzâde İsmâil Ağa with the rank of mülâzım; this record agrees with the account that he took up service in the new army shortly after the corps was abolished.
Family
According to the footnote, his father, Hâfız Ömer Ağa, kethüda of the sipahis, was the brother of Köprülü Hâfız Hasan Ağa, head of the sultan's musketeers; Hasan Ağa's son, İsmâil Efendi, müderris of the Sâniye-i Süleymaniye (entry 212 of the book), is therefore İsmâil Pasha's first cousin. No information was found in other sources about Köprülüzâde İsmâil Pasha's military career.
