The Çeribaşı Quarter and Mosque
The Çeribaşı quarter where İsmail Efendi lived lies, according to Hüsameddin's account in the first volume, on the northern foot of the Karakaya, on a site that was formerly called Sungur Mülkü. Bordering it are the quarters of Acem Ali on the east, Devehâne on the west, Bozahâne on the north and Şehre Küstü on the south. The quarter took its name because Çeribaşı Eminüddin Mehmed Çelebi, one of the prominent emirs in the time of the Amasya emir Şadgeldi Pasha and then of Devatdar Ahmed Pasha, lived here and had a masjid built. The date-stone of the mosque has been removed and its endowment deed has not been found; the date of construction can be deduced only indirectly, from a deed witnessed while the founder was still alive in 793 [1391]. Hüsameddin writes that the building style of the mosque resembles the Sarachane Mosque, that the date-stones of both have been removed, and that this deserves investigation; the name and the traces of Şadgeldi Padishah also seem to have been erased from these buildings. A minaret was added to the mosque in 1197 [1782-83], and the mufti Mütevellizâde Hacı Ahmed Efendi had a pulpit placed in 1118 [1706-07]. Ziya Pasha had the mosque repaired in 1281 [1864-65]; when the dome began to leak again, Hüsameddin's father Abdîzâde Hacı Mehmed Ağa in 1309 [1891-92] had a structure called an ağdırma built over the dome and put it under protection.
Hüsameddin was born in the house adjoining the west side of the same mosque. A biographical source also gives his birthplace as Çeribaşı. The mosque in which İsmail Efendi preached thus belongs to the quarter where the book's author was born. Since İsmail Efendi died in 1278 [1861-62] and Hüsameddin was born in 1286 [1869], the author cannot have seen him; the information in the text must rest on the accounts of others or on records.
