In Modern English
He was from Yozgat. He is known as "Bostancı" (gardener of the palace corps). On the first day of the month of Safer 1105 [1693], in addition to the post he held, he became mutasarrıf (governor) of Amasya and appointed Bağdatlıoğlu Mehmed Ağa, one of the notables of Amasya, as mütesellim (deputy governor) of Amasya. In the month of Rebîülâhir, since Deli Hızır Beyzâde Kurd Mehmed Bey, who had become alaybeyi (commander of the timar-holding cavalry) of Amasya with the dismissal of Gürcüzâde Mehmed Bey, remained with the army, Deli Emîr Paşazâde es-Seyyid Mustafa Bey became alaybeyi of Amasya.
On the first day of Şaban, with the dismissal of the Naqib es-Seyyid Osmân Ağa, Emîr Hacı Abdüllatif Çelebi became deputy of the naqib al-ashraf. Then the sanjak of Amasya was taken from Mahmûd Pasha's hands and given, with the rank of beylerbeyi of Rumeli, to the chief usher (çavuşbaşı) Şehrî Mehmed Ağa.

The Sivas Beylerbeyi's Additional Post
Mahmûd Pasha took Amasya "ilhâken," that is, not as a separate post but as a sanjak added to the beylerbeyilik of Sivas that he held. In the previous entry it is written that when Kadızâde Hüseyin Pasha regained his health and moved to Raqqa, the sanjak was given to the beylerbeyi of Sivas, Mahmûd Pasha; in the entry on Hüseyin Pasha it is also recorded that Mahmûd Pasha of Yozgat became beylerbeyi of Sivas on 5 Şaban 1104. Thus Amasya was temporarily attached to the governor of Sivas, the provincial center, and the city's affairs were again left to a mütesellim from Amasya, Bağdatlıoğlu Mehmed Ağa. This arrangement lasts only seven months.
The "Bostancı" Epithet
The pasha's epithet shows his place of training in the palace. According to Abdülkadir Özcan's entry on the bostancı, the members of the Bostancı Corps were chosen from among the strong and showy ones of the devshirme boys and worked in the vineyards and gardens belonging to Topkapı Palace and on the sultan's boats. Besides Istanbul and Edirne, there were also bostancıs in places that had vineyards and gardens belonging to the sultan, such as Bursa, Gallipoli and Amasya. Bostancıs taken out of the palace were given to the cavalry of the Porte's slave troops or to the Arsenal Corps, and the bostancıbaşıs, the heads of the corps, generally went out to outside service as sanjak governors, sometimes as kapıcıbaşı or beylerbeyi. Mahmûd Pasha's rise to the beylerbeyilik is an example of this path. Another former bostancıbaşı who had settled in Amasya in the same years, İnekçi Hüseyin Ağa, appears in later entries as a waqf administrator.
The attribution "of Yozgat" is also noteworthy. Yozgat at that time lay within the sanjak of Bozok, and in the sources those who came from this region are also called "Bozoklu"; Mustafa Pasha of Bozok, who was grand vizier at the time of Mahmûd Pasha's appointment, is one of them. Hüsâmeddin's saying "Yozgatlı" may reflect the naming of his own time. No record was found of whether Mahmûd Pasha had any closeness to Bozoklu Mustafa Pasha.
No information was found in other sources about the pasha's later life. According to Hüsâmeddin's own records, however, the sanjak of Amasya will be given to him for the second time in early 1108, while he is the guardian of Chios. Chios was an important post then: the island was surrendered to the Venetians on 21 September 1694 and recovered on 22 February 1695 in a counter-operation of the Ottoman fleet.
