Amasya emîr-i kebîri Hacı Kutlu Şâh evlâdından Birinci Şâdgeldizâde Devâtdâr Ahmed Paşa'nın mahdûmu ve Bâyezîd Paşa'nın dâmâdıdır.⁵⁴⁶ Timur Hân'ın şehzâdesi Kara Mehmed Sultân'ın emriyle 805 senesi rebî'ulevvelinin evâhirinde Amasya emîr-i kebîri oldu.
Lâkin Kara Mehmed Sultân'ın etvâr ve harekâtından şer istişmâm edenlerden Saru Şeyh, Şeker Çelebi ve birkaç bey gece Amasya'dan firâr ve Lâdikli İsrâfil Çelebi gibi ba'zıları ihtifâ edib Saru Şeyh, Haleb vâlîsi Emîr Şeyh el-Mü'eyyidî nezdine ve Şeker Çelebi Kudüs'e gitdi.
Amasya'nın medâr-ı iftihârı olan kıdvetü'l-muhakkikîn Hazret-i Pîr İlyâs, pek metîn bir zât idi. Bir tarafa savuşmadı. Gelen hey'et ve askerin [168] masârif-i seferiyye nâmına ağır tazmînâta mahkûm olan Amasya'nın a'yân ve efrâdı bu tazmînâtı derhâl tesviye etdi.
Ancak Timur Hân'dan gelen fermânda Mevlânâ Pîr Şücâ'eddîn İlyâs'ın ve yeğeni Mevlânâ Şemseddîn Ahmed'in Şirvân'a i'zâmı emr edildiğinden Kara Mehmed Sultân Hazret-i Pîr'i yeğeniyle Şirvân'a yolcu etdi.
Bundan dolayı Amasya'nın gerek halkı ve gerek a'yânı fevkalâde sıkılmışlardı. Amasya a'yânından Yazarlızâde Ya'kûb, Atabeyzâde Yörgüç, Sunkurzâde Enişte Asâyiş, Melik İsmâ'il, Osmân Paşazâde Hacı Alî, Torumtayzâde Ebûbekir Beyler'le Amasya hey'et-i ilmiyyesi uzun müzâkerâta daldı.
Hey'et-i ilmiyyeden müftü Abdurrahmân, Tokâdî Kara Sinan, Muslihzâde Abdulhay ve Mehmed Şâh, Halifetzâde Hasan Çelebiler pek değerli zevât idiler.
Lâkin şehzâdenin me'lûf olduğu ayş u nûşdan tevbekâr olması, kölelerini de halk üzerine musallat etmemesi cümle-i mukarrerâtdan idi.
Çünkü Tokat'a İnaloğlu İbrâhim, Çorum'a Köpekoğlu Süli, Lâdik kazâsına Gözleroğlu Alî, Turhal kazâsına Köpekoğlu Hasan, Artukâbâd'a Köpekoğlu Hüseyin gibi türediler müstevlî olmuşlardı.
Fakat Amasya a'yânı bu teklîfe aslâ muvâfakat etmediler. Şehzâde Çelebi Sultân'a intizâr ederek halkı hüsn-i idâre etmeye bezl-i makdûr etmişlerdi.
Bunlar önlerine çıkan Kara Yahyâ Bey'in bin süvârîden mürekkeb kuvvetini kırdılar, Osmâncık’a kadar geldiler.
Bu esnâda Merzifon ve Gümüş kazâlarının emîri Hakalalı Âbâdoğlu Hacı Mehmed Bey ve Gümüş kadısı Osmâncıklı İmâm Tâyisoğlu Hacı Halîl Efendi idi. Hacı Bey'in nüfûzu, Hacı Halîl Efendi'nin akıl ve dehâsı, fazl ve zekâsı pek meşhûr idi.
İsfendiyâr Bey, gerek Osmâncık emîri Koca Mahmûd Bey'i ve gerek Hakala'da oturan Kara Devletşâh'ı kendisine imâle ederek şehzâdeyi Amasya'ya yanaşdırmamak için her türlü tedâbîre mürâca'at etmişdi. Fakat Hacı Bey'le Hacı Halîl Efendi bu tedâbîre vâkıfdı.
Kara Devletşâh'ın ma'iyyetinde o zamâna göre pek mühim kuvvet vardı. Şehzâdenin beş yüz süvârisine karşı kuvveti on bin süvârîden ziyâde idi.
Bunlar Şehzâde Mehmed'in Osmâncık’a geldiğini haber aldıkları anda şehzâdeyi tertîbâtdan haberdâr etdiler. Kara Devletşâh'ı ve ma'iyyetini tertîb edilen ziyâfetde sarhoş etdikleri bir zamânda Çelebi Sultân'ın kuvvetleri basdırıp kendisini öldürdüler. Süvârîlerini dağıtdılar.
Amasyalılar, Hakala önlerine gelip şehzâdeyi istikbâl etdiler. [172] Amasya boğazının önünde tertîb edilen ziyâfetde Amasya müftüsü Gümüşlüzâde Abdurrahmân Çelebi, Amasya meclisinde tekarrür eden şerâ'iti Çelebi Sultân'a arz ve teblîğ, Çelebi Sultân da ma'a'l-memnûniyye bu şerâ'iti kabûl etmişdi.
İdrîs Paşa, "Târîh-i Osmânî"sinde⁵⁴⁷ diyor ki: "Şehzâde Çelebi Sultân Mehmed, Amasya boğazının önüne geldikde Amasya a'yânı istikbâl ederek ayş u işretden tevbe etmesini; bu teklîflerini kabûl etdiği takdîrde uğrunda her türlü fedâkârlığı kabûl edeceklerini arz etdiler.
Çelebi Sultân Mehmed, bu teklîfden fevkalâde memnûn oldu. Atından aşağı inip âbdest aldı. İki rek'at namâz edâsından sonra müftî-i memleket ve a'yân huzûrunda her türlü menâhîden tevbe edib bu kadar fedâkâr zevâta nâ'il olduğundan dolayı Cenâb-ı Hakk'a hamd ü senâ ederek Amasya'ya girdi".
In Modern English
He is of the line of the grand emir of Amasya Hacı Kutlu Şâh, the son of Devâtdâr Ahmed Pasha, the First Şâdgeldizâde, and the son-in-law of Bâyezîd Pasha. By order of Kara Mehmed Sultan, son of Timur Han, he became grand emir of Amasya at the end of Rebîülevvel 805.
But Saru Şeyh, Şeker Çelebi, and a few beys, among those who sensed evil in the attitude and conduct of Kara Mehmed Sultan, fled from Amasya by night, and some, such as İsrâfil Çelebi of Ladik, hid. Saru Şeyh went to Emîr Şeyh el-Mü'eyyidî, governor of Aleppo, and Şeker Çelebi to Jerusalem.
The pride of Amasya, Hazret-i Pîr İlyâs, foremost of the researchers, was a very steadfast person. He did not slip away to one side. The notables and people of Amasya, condemned to heavy compensation in the name of the campaign expenses of the delegation and troops that had come, paid this compensation at once.
But since the decree from Timur Han ordered that Mevlânâ Pîr Şücâeddîn İlyâs and his nephew Mevlânâ Şemseddîn Ahmed be sent to Shirvan, Kara Mehmed Sultan sent Hazret-i Pîr off to Shirvan with his nephew. He himself also left Amasya with his retinue.
After Pîr İlyâs was sent to Shirvan, his other nephew Gümüşlüzâde Celâleddîn Abdurrahmân Çelebi came to his vacated post and became mufti and şeyhülislam of Amasya. In the endowment deed of Ya'kûb Pasha this person is given the Arabic title meaning "mufti of the two communities (humans and jinn), şeyhülislam and sheikh of the Muslims."
Kara Devletşâh, although he saw and heard that Şâdgeldi Bey had been appointed to the emirate, neither gave up his claim to the emirate, nor left Hakala and went elsewhere, nor ceased his tyranny and plunder. There was also no force to throw Kara Devletşâh out from there.
For this reason both the people and the notables of Amasya were extraordinarily distressed. The notables of Amasya Yazarlızâde Ya'kûb, Atabeyzâde Yörgüç, Sunkurzâde Enişte Asâyiş, Melik İsmâ'il, Osmân Paşazâde Hacı Alî, and Torumtayzâde Ebûbekir Beys, together with the body of scholars of Amasya, plunged into long deliberations.
Of the body of scholars, the mufti Abdurrahmân, Kara Sinan of Tokat, Muslihzâde Abdulhay and Mehmed Şâh, and Halifetzâde Hasan Çelebis were very valuable persons. Şâdgeldi Bey, emir of Amasya, and his paternal uncle's son Mustafa Beyzâde Îsâ Bey presided over this council.
In this council it was finally decided that Prince Çelebi Sultan Mehmed be summoned from Bolu to Amasya. For the prince had considerable troops and power with him. The command staff of this army was also made up of select men of Amasya.
But among the conditions decided upon were that the prince repent of the amusement and drink he was accustomed to, and not unleash his slaves upon the people. In this way the evil and tyranny of the local lords who had sprung up everywhere could be prevented.
For upstart persons such as İnaloğlu İbrâhim in Tokat, Köpekoğlu Süli in Çorum, Gözleroğlu Alî in the district of Ladik, Köpekoğlu Hasan in the district of Turhal, and Köpekoğlu Hüseyin in Artukâbâd had come to dominate.
Yûsuf Âsâyiş Bey was both nephew and son-in-law of Yahşî Bey, father of Bâyezîd Pasha. He was known by the name "Enişte Âsâyiş Bey." He became head of the delegation that would summon the prince to Amasya. He left Amasya and went to Bolu with his friends.
But İsfendiyâr Bey, ruler of Kastamonu, was constantly pressing Şâdgeldi Bey, emir of Amasya and son of his own sister, and through him the notables of Amasya, to bring them over to himself, and promised to remove Kara Devletşâh.
But the notables of Amasya never agreed to this offer. Waiting for Prince Çelebi Sultan, they had worked as far as they could to govern the people well. Taşanzâde Alî Bey, in comparison to the other district beys, was behaving somewhat rebelliously and hardly recognized Amasya. Beyond that, Mahmûd Bey, bey of Osmâncık, had at once drawn close to İsfendiyâr Bey.
Prince Mehmed Çelebi was in any case awaiting this call from Amasya. For he thought that the Amasyans, like the people of Konya, Kütahya, and Aydın, would offer allegiance to their old beys. Enişte Âsâyiş Bey's invitation delighted Çelebi Sultan greatly. He set out toward Amasya at once with his retinue.
The Amasyans had been compelled to this call in the name of Turkishness and national happiness. For they had thought that to find the old national unity, the old Turkish strength, it was necessary to have great influence and power, and at that time they had seen this influence and power only in the Ottoman dynasty.
It is a long-tested truth that the happiness and rise of the Turks, the exaltation of the glory of Turkishness, depend on the intellect and genius of a prudent, authoritative commander who will be at their head.
All of Turkestan had been saved from Chinese captivity by a Çaganbay and from Persian captivity by a Singir Han, and all of Europe's captivity by Turkish heroes such as Gâzi Mustafa Kemâl.
İsfendiyâr Bey, learning that Prince Çelebi Sultan was going toward Amasya, added a military force to Yahyâ Bey, son of Kutar, the son of his other sister, and kept it waiting ready around Osmâncık. He was going to have the prince killed on the road.
With the prince were about five hundred horsemen, with Gömlüoğlu Alî Pasha, Kutlu Şâhoğlu Yâkût Pasha, and Sunkuroğlu Bâyezîd Pasha. These broke the force of a thousand horsemen of Kara Yahyâ Bey that came before them and reached as far as Osmâncık.
At this time the emir of the districts of Merzifon and Gümüş was Âbâdoğlu Hacı Mehmed Bey of Hakala, and the judge of Gümüş was Hacı Halîl Efendi, son of Tâyis, imam of Osmâncık. Hacı Bey's influence and Hacı Halîl Efendi's intellect and genius, knowledge and intelligence were very famous.
İsfendiyâr Bey, drawing both Koca Mahmûd Bey, emir of Osmâncık, and Kara Devletşâh, who sat in Hakala, to his side, had resorted to every kind of measure so as not to let the prince approach Amasya. But Hacı Bey and Hacı Halîl Efendi knew these measures.
Kara Devletşâh had in his retinue a force very important for that time. Against the prince's five hundred horsemen his force was more than ten thousand horsemen. Hacı Bey's brother Abdullah Bey sat in Hakala and Hacı Bey in Merzifon. Hasan Bey, son of Abdullah Bey, was not inferior to his uncle in intellect and prudence. Beyond that he was extremely courageous.
The moment they learned that Prince Mehmed had come to Osmâncık, they informed the prince of the preparations. While they were getting Kara Devletşâh and his retinue drunk at a banquet they had set up, Çelebi Sultan's forces raided and killed him. They scattered his horsemen.
The Amasyans came before Hakala and met the prince. At the banquet set up before the Amasya gorge, Gümüşlüzâde Abdurrahmân Çelebi, mufti of Amasya, presented and made known to Çelebi Sultan the conditions decided upon in the council of Amasya. Çelebi Sultan accepted these conditions with pleasure.
İdrîs Pasha says in his "Târîh-i Osmânî": "When Prince Çelebi Sultan Mehmed came before the Amasya gorge, the notables of Amasya met him and presented that he repent of drink and amusement; that if he accepted these proposals of theirs they would face every sacrifice for him.
Çelebi Sultan Mehmed was extraordinarily pleased with this proposal. He dismounted from his horse and performed ablution. After performing two rak'ats of prayer, in the presence of the mufti and the notables he repented of every kind of prohibited thing, and, praising and thanking the Almighty for having found such devoted persons, entered Amasya."

The Summoning of the Prince
The present-day encyclopedia account supports the framework Hüsameddin relays but places a different emphasis at one point. Kara Devletşah, Kubad-oğlu, Mezid Bey, and the Taşan family were local dynasties that accepted Timur's sovereignty after the Battle of Ankara. Mehmed, too, accepted Timur's sovereignty and thereby legitimized his administration in the Tokat-Amasya region. In establishing his authority against his rivals he was supported by religious scholars and notables of the city; the local beys had neither prestige against him nor the legitimacy of an Ottoman prince. The same entry refers directly to Hüsameddin's third volume (p. 157-198) for this information. That is, the event Hüsameddin narrates as "the summoning of the prince against Timur's man Kara Devletşah" is placed, in the present-day account, within a period in which Çelebi Mehmed accepted Timur's superiority. Hüsameddin does not bring this relationship to the fore in the entry.
The End of Kara Devletşah
According to Hüsameddin, the Âbâdoğlu and Abdullah Beyzâde family at Hakala got Kara Devletşah drunk at a banquet, after which the prince's forces raided and killed him. The local official historical narrative, on the other hand, writes only that Çelebi Mehmed fought and defeated him and that Kara Devletşah was killed on the battlefield. The two accounts give the same result and differ in detail.
Pîr İlyâs and Shirvan
Timur's sending Pîr İlyâs to Shirvan with his nephew appears in present-day studies as well as the taking to Shirvan of a scholar whose learning was admired in Timur's time. The date 805 and the name Kara Mehmed Sultan that Hüsameddin gives are preserved exactly in these relayings. For the Khalwati tekke founded in Amasya after Pîr İlyâs's return from Shirvan and for the poet Mihrî Hatun, mentioned as his granddaughter, see the previous entry. That his nephew Celâleddîn Abdurrahmân Çelebi was Pîr İlyâs's son-in-law is also understood from the information on where the tomb of Pîr İlyâs stands: the tomb also contains the grave of his son-in-law Pir Celaleddin Abdurrahman. The person Hüsameddin calls "nephew" appears as "son-in-law" in this information; this difference has not been resolved in the sources.
The Author's Commentary
In this section of the book Hüsameddin interprets events with the concepts of "Turkishness" and "national unity" and places Çaganbay, Singir Han, and Mustafa Kemal in the same row. These sentences come not from fifteenth-century sources but from the outlook of the author's own age. Whether the scene of repentance relayed from İdrîs Pasha (İdrîs-i Bitlisî) is found in his own text could not be checked in this study.
Hüsameddin's Footnotes
That Şâdgeldi Bey was the son-in-law of Bâyezîd Pasha is written explicitly in the endowment deed of Bâyezîd Pasha's daughter Hatîce Hâtun. A copy of İdrîs Pasha's Târîh-i Osmânî is found in the Bâyezîd Public Library.
