In Modern English

She was the daughter of Seyyid Celâleddîn Mehmed Efendi, deputy naqib al-ashraf (head of the descendants of the Prophet) of Amasya, and died in 1059 [1649-50] after endowing cash for the affairs of the Emîr Pasha Lodge. She too was one of the learned women, a poet and an edîbe [a woman of letters]. She was called "Şerîfe Ümmü Hatun".

Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • nakîbü'l-eşrâf: the official who keeps the records of the seyyids, that is the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad, and represents them
  • kâim-makâm: deputy
  • mesâlih: affairs, needs
  • nukûd: cash money
  • âlimât-ı nisâ: learned women
  • şerîfe: a woman descended from the Prophet

The Other Entry of the Same Name

Two different women appear in the book under the heading "Ümmü Gülsüm". The previous entry (7-312) is Gülsün Ana, daughter of Saraçlar Pîri Sun'ullah, who died around 875 [1470-71]. This entry is the woman poet who died about a century and a half later, in 1059 [1649-50]; the two should not be confused.

What Was Searched For

No information was found in other sources on Seyyid Celâleddîn Mehmed Efendi, Şerîfe Ümmü Hatun or the Emîr Pasha Lodge. A study listing the Halvetî lodges of Amasya also does not mention a lodge under this name. Since no sample of Şerîfe's poems or of her endowment could be found, nothing can be said about her beyond what Hüsameddin gives.
