Notes and Research
Old Words in the Text
- neş'et eden: who grew up, was raised
- beylerbeyi: the highest military and administrative official of a region
- emîr-i dâd: emir of justice; the official who handled cases on behalf of the ruler
- terceme: biography, life story
The Title Emîr-i Dâd
Emîr is Arabic for "emir" and dâd is Persian for "justice". Among the Seljuks this official handled, on the ruler's behalf, cases outside the sharia suits, above all crimes committed against the state; he gave his decisions after consulting the scholars beside him. When the work of the Dîvân-ı Mezâlim grew too great for the sultan to conduct himself, the emîr-i dâd began to hear the cases. Among the Anatolian Seljuks this post gained greater importance and came immediately after the atabeg in protocol; deputies of emîr-i dâds were present in small iktas as well. According to this, the giving of this name to Emîr Çelebi points to his having held a post concerned with justice; but in which period and in whose service he carried out this duty is not clear from this entry.
What Was Searched For
No information was found in other sources on Emîr Sâdeddîn Umûr Bey, his father Şemseddîn Mahmûd Şah, his grandfather Tutuş Bey or Kedağra. To which place the settlement called "Köprü" corresponds today could not be verified either. The name Umûr Bey should not be confused with that of Gazi Umur Bey, ruler of the Aydınids (d. 748 [1348]); Hüsameddin's Umûr Bey is another emir mentioned in the Amasya Tarihi, and there is no record of a link with that ruler.
