Notes and Research

Old Words in the Text

  • meşâhîr-i şu'arâ: well-known poets
  • mescid imâmı: the official who leads prayer in a mosque
  • ref' edilmek: to be removed from office
  • evlâd: children, grandchildren, descendants

The Poet Ahmed Ayânî Çelebi

The entry consists of only four sentences. Although Ayânî is counted among poets, his poems or divan are not mentioned; under what pen name he wrote is not stated either. No information was found in other sources on him and the Ayânîoğulları. No reliable record could be reached on the Yakut Pasha Mosque either; since it is not clear from the sources whether the Yâkub Pasha Dervish Lodge in Amasya and this mosque are the same building, the two have not been linked here.

The office lasting three months, the reason for the dismissal not being written, and "Ayânîoğulları" being mentioned as a family name are the noteworthy features of the text. It is possible that the family name arose from a poet's pen name, but this is only a possibility; it is not confirmed in the sources.
