Encyclopedia · History of Amasya, Volume 6, p. 181 • Edited by: Doç. Dr. Recep Orhan ÖZEL - Doç. Dr. Metin HAKVERDİOĞLU
In Modern English
He was the son of Mîrlivâ Küçük Ali Bey, one of the notables of Amasya. He was among the well-known zeâmet holders and rose to prominence in Amasya. For a time he had served as collector of the cizye. He died in 1103 [1691-92]. His sons were Mehmed and Ali Bey. His brothers were Mehmed Bey and Hüseyin Pasha, one of the viziers. Since Ali Bey was a nephew of Hüseyin Pasha, he became known as "Hacı Yeğen Ali Bey". The Yeğenzâdes in Amasya are descended from him. Although the late man was extremely wealthy and devout, he was so miserly and thrifty that he was called "Kazan asmaz" (he does not hang a cauldron).

The Nickname "Kazan Asmaz"
The entry's title carries the nickname "Kazan Asmaz". To hang a cauldron means to put a cauldron on the hearth and cook food; the nickname can be understood as a name given to stinginess, in the sense that no one was fed in his house or that the cauldron hardly ever boiled. This interpretation rests on the known meaning of the idiom; Hüsameddin's own explanation says only that he was very miserly despite being rich and devout.
The nickname Yeğen is explained within this entry itself: Ali Bey, son of Ahmed Bey, was a nephew (yeğen) of the Vizier Hüseyin Pasha, and was therefore called "Yeğen". This name should not be confused with the name of Yeğen Osman Pasha and the name "Yeğenlü" given to his partisans; in the relevant entries Yeğen Osman Pasha's men are meant, while here it is only a descriptor of kinship. No source was seen speaking of a common descent for the families bearing the same nickname.
No information was found in other sources on Küçük Ali Bey, Hüseyin Pasha and the other members of the family. No reliable record could be reached either on the present state of the family known in Amasya as "Yeğenzâdes".
