In Modern English

He was from Amasya. He was the son of Hayreddînzade Mehmed Efendi, a former secretary of the grand vizier's tezkire. He was also called "Aynîzade." He entered the Sublime Porte and was trained there. During the grand vizierate of Kara İbrahim Pasha he became a man whose word was heeded; after the pasha was dismissed and killed, he lived a troubled life.

Later, during the grand vizierate of Merzifonlu Hacı Ali Pasha, he became barley steward. In 1104 [1692-93], shortly after the said grand vizier was dismissed, he too was dismissed; he became divan clerk to Amcazade Hüseyin Pasha, and in 1109 [1697-98], again under his grand vizierate, janissary clerk.

In 1113 [1701-02], when he was removed from this clerkship, he became accountant of the cizye. In 1114 [1702-03], during the grand vizierate of Daltaban Mustafa Pasha, he became influential. On the sixth day of Ramadan 1114, when the said grand vizier was dismissed and killed, he too was dismissed, imprisoned and had his property confiscated; then he came to Amasya as an exile.

For Daltaban Mustafa Pasha and the subject of this entry had been together in the circle of the former grand vizier Kara İbrahim Pasha. For this reason they were on good terms. The pasha's misfortune rubbed off on him as well. He died in Amasya at the beginning of 1117 [1705].

The Grand Vizierate of Daltaban Mustafa Pasha

In Hüsâmeddin's account, the career of Hayreddînzade Ahmed Efendi rises and falls with the fortunes of the pashas to whom he was attached: he served as clerk and steward under Hacı Ali Pasha and Amcazade Hüseyin Pasha, and went into exile with the fall of Daltaban Mustafa Pasha. According to the encyclopedia entry on Daltaban Mustafa Pasha, he was born in Manastır, attached himself while young to Grand Vizier Kara İbrahim Pasha, and became grand vizier on 27 September 1702 in place of Amcazade Hüseyin Pasha. This agrees with Hüsâmeddin's counting the two pashas as belonging to the same circle.

According to the same entry, his grand vizierate was the scene of various palace intrigues, and his provocative attitude toward the Janissary Corps and his secret preparations for war despite the explicit clauses of the Treaty of Karlowitz roused his enemies at the palace. He was dismissed by Sultan Mustafa II through a plot laid by Râmi Mehmed Pasha and Şeyhülislam Feyzullah Efendi, and was killed on 10 Ramadan 1114 (28 January 1703). Hüsâmeddin dates this event to the sixth day of Ramadan. The four-day difference between the two dates may have arisen from a divergence of sources or from a scribal error; which is correct could not be determined from these readings. Whereas Hüsâmeddin does not give the story of the nickname "Daltaban," the encyclopedia entry writes that the pasha was called by this name because he walked about the city on foot in disguise and moved quickly. A fountain of his in the Koska district of Istanbul and a street bearing his name, Daltaban Yokuşu, are still known today.

No information was found in other sources on Hayreddînzade Ahmed Efendi, his father Mehmed Efendi, the nickname Aynîzade, or his exile to Amasya.
