He was from Lâdik. He was the son of Hâce es-Seyyid Mustafa Efendi, one of the scholars of Rifâ'î descent. He completed his studies in Amasya under Payaslı el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi, one of the learned men of the city, then gave public lessons in Lâdik and became müderris (madrasa professor) of the İmâmiyye Madrasa. In 1241 [1825-26] he became mufti of Lâdik in place of Osmân Efendi, and he died in that post in 1250 [1834-35]. He was among the noted scholars.

Lâdik and the Rifâî Milieu
In Ottoman times Lâdik was a district (kaza) of the Amasya sanjak. At the beginning of the sixteenth century the sanjak consisted of the districts of Amasya center, Lâdik and Merzifon; at the end of the nineteenth century Lâdik was still one of its eight districts. Population registers for Lâdik from the first half of the nineteenth century survive, and besides neighborhoods and villages they also contain records of madrasas and inns. Hüsameddin's mention of the İmâmiyye Madrasa could be compared with such records, but no further detail on that madrasa could be read here.
The phrase "Evlâd-ı Rifâ'iyye" also connects to the religious history of the Amasya region. The only zâviye that Ibn Battûta mentions in Amasya in the fourteenth century is a Rifâî zâviye. Endowment records of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries likewise show that most of the zâviyes in the Amasya region, and most of their revenues, were in the hands of Rifâî, Halvetî and Nakşî sheikhs. Seyyid Mustafa Efendi's Rifâî descent fits this local setting.
Lâdik was a place that produced scholars. Mehmed Efendi (İmâm-ı Sultânî), an Ottoman scholar, was born in the seventeenth century in the district of Lâdik, then part of the Amasya sanjak; his connection to the Hocazâde of Hüsameddin's entry is not known, but he shows the scholarly tradition of the district.
On the question of the muftiship, the text tells us this much: Ahmed Efendi succeeded Osmân Efendi and appears as both müderris of the İmâmiyye Madrasa and mufti until his death. Payaslı el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi is also named among the teachers in Hüsameddin's entries 752 and 757; that several scholars who studied under the same Amasya teacher appear side by side in this volume points to his circle of students. No information on this man, on Hocazâde Ahmed Efendi or on the muftis of Lâdik was found in other sources.
