In Modern English

He was from Köprü. He is the son of Hüsâmeddin Efendi, one of the scholars of Köprü. He learned and received an ijaza from his father and also from Damad Osman and Hacı İlyas Efendis in Amasya, and gave public lectures in Köprü.

In 1114 [1702-03] the Murad Bey malikâne, conditional on lecturing in Köprü, was given to him, and thus his livelihood was eased. Devoting himself to teaching, he gave the people sermons and counsel; he died on the twenty-third of Zilhicce 1129 [1717]. He was among the well-known scholars.

Another Hâfız Ahmed Efendi was also among the scholars and gave public lectures; in 1112 [1700-01] he became imam at the Yörgüç Pasha Mosque in Amasya. He died in the early days of 1130 [1717-18].

Köprü and the Murad Bey Malikâne

The Köprü named in the entry corresponds to today's Vezirköprü. Ahmed Efendi received his first education from his father, that is, in Köprü; he completed his studies in Amasya with two teachers and returned to Köprü.

Hüsâmeddin's phrase "the Murad Bey malikâne with a lecture condition" describes the malikâne revenue as tied to the condition of giving lectures. In other words, a state revenue was given to a scholar as a means of livelihood. No source was found showing the details of this practice or who Murad Bey was.

The Yörgüç Pasha Mosque

The Yörgüç Pasha Mosque, where the second Ahmed Efendi served as imam, stands on the bank of the Yeşilırmak in Amasya. According to the inscription over its door it was built by Atabeg Yörgüç Pasha in 834 (1430). The mosque belongs to the group of tabhane (zaviye-type) buildings and has no last-congregation porch. The closed section to its east is thought to have been the lecture hall of a madrasa that has not survived. To its west lies the tomb holding four marble sarcophagi belonging to Yörgüç Pasha and his family. Because it was damaged by floods of the Yeşilırmak, its interior has been entirely renewed and it has no original minaret; it has a wooden minaret. In the bibliography of the TDV İslâm Ansiklopedisi, Hüsâmeddin's book is listed among the sources.
