The Şâmice Quarter and the Hayriyye Professorship
The Şâmice Quarter (written Şamice today) lies in the center of Amasya. The Halîfet Gazi Madrasa and Tomb stand in this quarter, on Torumtay Street. This Seljuk madrasa, dated 1209-10, was repaired after the earthquake of 1647 with wooden additions built by the müderris Hasan Efendi, and in 1888 it was renewed from top to bottom by the mufti of Amasya, Hacı Osman Hilmi Efendi. That scholars lived in the quarter shows how close madrasa education stood to the everyday life of the city.
The phrase "müderris of the Hayriyye" does not seem to correspond to a known Amasya madrasa: when the madrasas that taught in Amasya in the twentieth century are listed, no madrasa named Hayriyye is mentioned. The name may be tied to a waqf or to a name that later changed, but this could not be verified with the sources that could be read.
Payaslı el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi is also named as a teacher in entries 750 and 752. The students in these three entries were trained in the same circle: Ahmed Efendi completed his studies under this teacher. No information on Kilislizâde Ahmed Efendi, on his father İsmâil Efendi or on Payaslı Mehmed Efendi was found in other sources.
