His Teacher
Müftüzade Caniklili Hacı Mehmed Efendi, named as Ahmed Efendi's teacher, appears as the mufti of Amasya in other entries of this book. On the following pages "the former mufti of Amasya, Canikli Hacı Mehmed Efendi" is named as the father of Ahmed Efendi-Caniklizâde, and the same name is among the teachers of Ahmed Efendi-Hacıköylüzâde. It is very likely that Hüsameddin means the same person by these names, but the text does not say so openly. The father of Çarşambalı Ahmed Efendi is named Ali; the text does not say which Çarşamba he was from.
The Council of Lawsuits
The "meclis-i de'âvâ" of which Ahmed Efendi became a member in 1262 [1845-46] is one of the judicial councils set up after the Tanzimat. According to the sources, the establishment in every district of a deâvî council presided over by the sharia judge was regulated by the Provincial Regulation of 7 November 1864; this council, made up of three members, heard cases at first instance. Hüsameddin, however, writes of this council as a membership of people living around 1264-1265, that is, long before the regulation. The difference suggests that the name was used earlier for a more informal council, or that Hüsameddin applied the later-established name to the past; the sources consulted do not explain this distinction, so the interpretation is an inference. No record was found of the founding of this council in Amasya.
