The Çilehâne Lodge
The Çilehâne Lodge is one of the principal Halvetî lodges of Amasya. It stands north of the tomb of Pîr İlyas, in the structure called Yâkub Pasha Mansion. According to the sources, the lodge was built and endowed in 815/1412 by Pazarlıoğlu Yâkub Pasha, beylerbeyi of Ankara, for the mufti Gümüşlüzâde Abdurrahman Çelebi. Its waqf deed was registered in Zilkade 815 [February 1413] by Mevlânâ Rükneddin Mahmud, kadı of Amasya. Because many Halvetî sheikhs were trained there, the lodge was called the "Dervish Factory." Since Gümüşlüzâde Abdurrahman Çelebi was buried in the lodge, there is a tomb inside the structure, and this tomb is also known as the "Lower Pîrs Tomb." The structure was used as a madrasa in 1622, was counted among the forty-akçe madrasas and was run by müderrises. Bayezid II had the structure rebuilt in masonry in 1485, and in 1894 it was repaired again through the efforts of the people and income set aside from the waqfs of Abdülhamid II. In the lodge there are halvethanes (retreat rooms); these rooms are small units about 1.90 x 1.90 meters in size.
The Golden Chain
The chain of sheikhs at the Çilehâne is called among the Halvetîs of Amasya "silsiletü'z-zeheb" (the golden chain). In the source this chain continues after Buhârîzâde Pîr Mehmed Halvetî with Sheikh Yâkub, Sheikh Abdurrahman, Sheikh İzzeddin Hasan and Sheikh Hüsameddin Hüseyin in turn. The three names in the lineage Hüsameddin gives (Pîr Mehmed Çelebi, Abdurrahman, Hüseyin) also appear in this chain. Sheikh Yâkub is also listed in the chain, whereas in the genealogy Hüsameddin gives, Abdurrahman is the direct son of Pîr Mehmed Çelebi; the chain of sheikhship and the family descent may not be exactly the same. Ahmed Efendi's name is not mentioned in this relay.
Points Where Hüsameddin's Account Differs
Hüsameddin writes that the Çilehâne was counted as a madrasa in the year 1047 and that Ahmed Efendi therefore moved to the Gülabî Pasha Lodge. A study on the Halvetiyye lodges, on the other hand, gives the year in which the structure was used as a madrasa as 1622 (about 1031). The two records may be different dates of the same event, or it is possible that the structure served as a madrasa in separate periods; this distinction could not be settled with the sources that could be read. As for the Gülabî Pasha Lodge, no details were found in the sources that could be read.
