In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He was the son of Mustafa Ağa, son of Efteli Mehmed Çavuş, who had a han and a bath in the nahiye of İnepazar. On his father's death he came into a zeamet (large timar) of twenty thousand akçe, and he rose by showing merit in the Baghdad war in the retinue of Tayyar Mehmed Pasha of Lâdik.

Then he became çavuşlar kethüdası (the leading administrator of the çavuşes) and reached a zeamet of thirty-two thousand akçe in the sanjaks of Sivas and Amasya. When İbşir Mustafa Pasha, who became grand vizier in Zilhicce 1064 [1654], came to Istanbul and became the sultan's son-in-law, on the direction and recommendation of Sâlih Ağa of Amasya, İbşir Pasha's kethüda, he became kethüda of his wife Ayşe Sultan, and in 1065 [1654-55] çavuşbaşı.

But in the month of Receb of the same year, he was dismissed by Murad Pasha, who became grand vizier with the killing of İbşir Pasha, and sent to Amasya. In early 1068 [1657-58] he died in a state of disaster. He is also called "Eftelioğlu." His son is Mustafa Ağa.

The Ezinepazar Han and Çavuş Han

The "han in the nahiye of İnepazar" Hüsameddin speaks of can be associated with the Ezinepazar Caravanserai, still standing today near the village of Aydınca-Ezinepazar in Amasya. This han is also known by the names İnepazarı Han and Çavuş Han. It lies on the historic route between Amasya, Tokat and Sivas. According to the sources, the structure rises on the foundations of an older han built by Mahperi Hatun between 1238 and 1246 in the time of Sultan Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev. In the Ottoman period, especially in 1650/51 (H. 1060), it was repaired and reorganized by Mehmed Çavuş. The inscribed marble slab in the entrance portal relates that Mehmed Çavuş had the structure repaired for charitable purposes. The structure was restored in 2007 by the General Directorate of Foundations.

The name "Çavuş Han" and Mehmed Çavuş, who made the repair, bring to mind Hüsameddin's record "Efteli Mehmed Çavuş, who had a han and a bath in the nahiye of İnepazar." However, it is not written in the sources that could be read that the Mehmed Çavuş in the inscription is Efteli Mehmed Çavuş. The link between them is an inference and should not be regarded as certain. Hüsameddin's text also does not say explicitly whether the han belonged to Mehmed Çavuş or to his son Mustafa Ağa.

İbşir Mustafa Pasha and the Political Circle

İbşir Mustafa Pasha was a statesman who rose in the provinces in the seventeenth century and reached the grand vizierate. In the time of Murad IV he served as mirahur (head of the sultan's stables) in the Revan and Baghdad campaigns. In October 1654 he became grand vizier with the sultan's approval. The preference, conveyed to the palace through the mediation of Ayşe Sultan and Mercan Ağa, was joined by the support of the has odalıs in the Enderun and the sipahis. His marriage to Ayşe Sultan is dated in one study to 1655 and interpreted as a step aimed at limiting İbşir Pasha's independent power in the provinces. İbşir Pasha was strangled in 1655 at the end of a rebellion directed by Kara Murad Pasha. The order Hüsameddin gives agrees with this. Çavuşzâde Ahmed Ağa, with İbşir Pasha's rise, became first kethüda of Ayşe Sultan, then çavuşbaşı; after the pasha's fall he was dismissed by the new grand vizier Murad Pasha. There is a small difference over the date of the marriage: Hüsameddin tells of the sultan's son-in-lawship right after İbşir Pasha's grand vizierate, at the end of 1064; the date in the study is 1655.

Tayyar Mehmed Pasha

Tayyar Mehmed Pasha of Lâdik, to whom Ahmed Ağa was attached, is the son of Uçar Mustafa Pasha and is reported to come from the Lâdik Yeni Bey line. While beylerbeyi of Sivas he rescued Sivas from the occupation by Abaza Pasha, the Beylerbeyi of Erzurum; in the Baghdad campaign of 1638, on the death of Bayram Pasha, he became grand vizier on 27 August 1638 and fell as a martyr during the siege on 23 December 1638. This is the event Hüsameddin calls the "Baghdad war."
