The Printing of the Fourth Volume
The fourth volume of Amasya Tarihi was printed in 1928, like the earlier ones, in Istanbul at the Necm-i İstikbâl Press. A study on the printing of Hüsameddin's books states that this edition was supported by the Governor of Amasya, Fâik Bey, and by Şirvanlı Bahaeddin Efendi, a member of the provincial council, together with his colleagues. This page is the author's formal note of thanks for that support. For the printing of the third volume (1927), by contrast, the contributions of Hilmi Bey, an earlier governor of Amasya, İsmail Hakkı Bey, then the deputy for Amasya, and the members of the provincial council were mentioned.
According to encyclopedic information, the only parts that could be published are the first four volumes and the "remainder" (bakiyye) of the fourth volume, printed in 1935. Of the work, which was prepared in twelve volumes, the fifth volume is lost, and the seven volumes from the sixth to the twelfth were purchased by the Municipality of Amasya for publication. The fourth volume, in which this page appears, is devoted, according to the sources, to the lives of people connected with Amasya, namely the scholars and sheikhs who grew up in Amasya and the governors who came to the city between 1017 (1608) and 1099 (1688) in the Hijri calendar.
What the Name Şirvânî Tells Us
"Şirvânî" in the name of the person thanked indicates a connection with the Shirvan region of Azerbaijan. Because of the large number of scholars who came from this region, and because İsmail Siraceddin Şirvânî, a great scholar of the Caucasus, lived in Amasya, the name "Şirvânî" came to be used in Amasya as a general name for people from there. Hüsameddin wrote the life stories of these people one by one in his work. No further detail was found on which family Bahâeddin Efendi came from.
About the Author
Hüseyin Hüsâmeddin was born in Amasya in the Çeribaşı neighborhood in November 1869 and died in Istanbul on 10 February 1939. His last post, as he also introduces himself on this page, was translator of old waqf records at the Evkaf Nezareti (Ministry of Pious Foundations). While encyclopedic assessments stress the value of his work, they also note that his failure to cite his sources in most cases has raised doubts about its scholarly reliability.
