The Limits of the Period
In this short introduction Hüsameddin divides the Ottoman-era history of Amasya into periods, and counts the third period by the Hijri calendar, from Receb 1017 to the end of Receb 1099. Because the Hijri year is shorter than the Gregorian year, eighty-two Hijri years correspond to roughly eighty Gregorian years; that is, the period runs from late 1608 to mid-1688. According to encyclopedic descriptions, the fourth volume of the work and its remainder (bakiyye) are devoted to the lives of people connected with Amasya, namely the scholars and sheikhs who grew up in Amasya and the governors who came to the city between 1017 (1608) and 1099 (1688). The third volume, for its part, covers events up to 1608, when Grand Vizier Kuyucu Murad Pasha cleared Amasya and its surroundings of bandits. The fourth volume thus begins where the previous one left off.
The Start of the Period
1608 is the year of the great campaign of cleansing carried out in Anatolia against the rebel and bandit groups known as the Celalis. In August 1608 Kuyucu Murad Pasha defeated Kalenderoğlu at Alaçayır, and he also had Tavil Halil, who was active around Amasya, and his brother Meymun seized at Kara Hasan Derbendi in the sanjak of Karahisar-ı Şarkî, destroying most of their forces. Hüsameddin starts the period immediately after this cleansing, in Receb 1017. As the reason for the appointment of the period's first sanjak governor, Çakalzâde Mehmed Pasha, to the sanjak of Amasya, Hüsameddin points to his services in the Karayazıcı rebellion and the War against the Bandits (Eşkıyâ Harbi).
