Caniklidir. Esbak Canik Emîri Tâceddîn İbrâhim Beyzâde Hüsâmeddîn Hasan Bey’in ahfâdından Ahmed Bey’in mahdûmudur.

Sâbık Amasya Mütesellimi Abdülfettah Ağa, tahsîl-i emvâl vazîfesinden de azl edilip İstanbul’a gitdiğinden yerine Amasya a‘yânından ve dergâh-ı âlî çavûşânından Yörgüç Paşazâde Hasan Bey Amasya muhassıl-ı emvâli oldu.

Cumâdelâhiresinde alaybeyi İskender Bey’in ref‘iyle kibâr-ı zu‘amâdan Gürcü Ali Bey Amasya alaybeyi olmuşdu.

Üç gün sonra Sivas’a gitdi.

Zilhicce evâilinde Amasya muhassıl-ı emvâli Yörgüç Paşazâde Hasan Bey, Sivas defterdârı olup gitdiğinden yerine çavûşân-ı dergâh-ı âlîden Amasyalı Hacı Beyzâde Mehmed Bey Amasya muhassıl-ı emvâli oldu. Bu sene Bağdat Vâlisi Kadızâde Ali Paşa’nın himmetiyle Basra kâ’im-makâmı olan Amasyalı Ali Paşazâde Hüseyin Bey’e Basra beylerbeyiliği verildi.

1020 senesi muharreminde Amasya mütesellimi es-Seyyid Ali Ağa Amasya’dan tedârik edilen ba’zı eşya ve levâzım-ı askeriyyeyi alıp Diyârbekir’e gitdiğinden yerine sipâhi meşâhirinden Cebecizâde Mahmûd Ağa mütesellim vekîli oldu.

Saferinde Amasya Müftüsü Köse Ahmed Efendi ba’zı hatîâtından dolayı azl edilip yerine tekrar Manavzâde Abdullah Efendi Amasya müftüsü ve sultâniyye müderrisi olup geldi. İstanbul’da Gülşeniyye meşâyih-i kibârından ve meşâhir-i sulehâdan Amasyalı eş-Şeyh Hasan Efendi vefât etdi.

Muhaddis-i meşhûr Zileli Abdurrahman Efendi, te’lîf etdiği “Kitâbü’l-Müfîd fî Şerhi’l-Hadîsi’l-Garîb” adlı eserini bu esnada Sivas’a gidip Vâlî Ca’fer Paşa’ya arz u takdîm etdiğini mezbûrun dibâcesinde yazmış, vezîr-i müşârün-ileyhin mazhar-ı taltîfâtı olup avdet etmişdi. [20]

İskender Bey’in uhdesinde bulunan Bülbül Hâtun ve Sinan Paşa vakıfları tevliyeti birâderi müteferrika Mustafa Bey’e tevcîh edildi.

Gurre-i şa’bânda Amasya kadısı Abdülvehhâb Efendi’nin yerine kibâr-ı kudâttan Abdülkerim Efendi Amasya kadısı ve Sivas vilâyetinde bulunan bütün evkâfın müfettişi oldu. Bu esnada Kadızâde Ali Paşa Bağdat’tan ma‘zûlen Amasya’ya gelip ikâmetine dair Sadr-ı a’zam Nasûh Paşa’nın emri vürûd etdi.

Bu sene zarfında Şehr-i Zor Beylerbeyi Şemseddîn Ahmed Paşa vefât edib Amasya’da emlâkine mahdûm-ı yegânesi Ali Bey vâris olabildi. Kezâlik Halep Vâlisi Amasyalı Emin Mehmed Paşa da Halep’te vefât etdi. Mahdûmu Mahmûd Bey mirlivâ oldu.

1021 senesi muharreminde Cebecizâde Mahmûd Ağa kethüdâyeri ve Amasya mütesellimi olup selefi es-Seyyid Ali Ağa Tokat voyvodası ve Amasya beytü’l-mâl emîni ve kethüdâ-yı sadr-ı âlî Lâdikli Mustafa Ağa Ankara beylerbeyi ve Mar’aş’tan azledilen Amasyalı Ömer Paşa da [21] Hacı Hamza kasabasında ikâmete me’mûr oldu.

Safer evâilinde Kadızâde Ali Paşa İstanbul’a hareket edeceğini Nasûh Paşa’ya yazdığı ve iki defa istid‘â ve istîzân etdiği halde yine ikâmeti emr u te’kîd edildiğine gücenip “Suçum nedir ki boş yere oturayım?” diyerek İstanbul’a müteveccihen Amasya’dan kalkıp gitdi.

Kadızâde Ali Paşa, Kuyucu Murat Paşa’nın damâdı idi. Nasûh Paşa, Murat Paşa’nın ve akrabasıyla etbâ‘ının hasm-ı bî-emânı olduğundan Murad Paşa’nın kethüdâsı Bîçâre Mustafa Ağa ile hazînedârı Hüseyin Ağa’yı yok yere öldürmüş, diğer kethüdâsı Ömer Paşa’yı Mar’aş’tan, Ali Paşa’yı da Bağdat’tan azlederek her ikisini de ikâmete me’mûr etmişdi.

Ali Paşa, Eskişehir’e vusûlünde Nasûh Paşa’dan gelen üçüncü ikâmet emrine rağmen ağırlığını ve tevâbı‘ını orada kethüdâsı Ahmed Ağa’ya bırakıp kendisi Üsküdar’a gitdi. Bunu haber alan Nasûh Paşa vezîr-i müşârün-ileyhin katlini telhîs etdiği halde Birinci Sultân Ahmed, muvâfakat etmediğinden Ali Paşa İstanbul’a yerleşdi.

Sivas Vâlisi Ca’fer Paşa, Sivas a‘yânının pek ağır görünen şikâyetlerini bi’t-tedkîk pek çok mübâlağa ile i‘zâm ve Mehmed Paşa’nın şiddet-i şekîmesinden tahlis-i girîbâne ihtimâm edilmesinden ileri geldiğini anlamakla Sivas a‘yânından ba’zılarını i’dâm ve ba’zılarını da nefyederek meseleyi halletmiş, bu suretle Mehmed Paşa da kurtulmuş oldu.

Rebîülâhirde Amasya Mutasarrıfı Canikli Osmân Paşa, Erzurum [22] beylerbeyi olduğundan Amasya sancağı Vâlî Ca’fer Paşa’nın inhâsıyla Sivas defterdârı Hasan Bey’e tevcîh edildi.

In Modern English

He was from Canik. He was the son of Ahmed Bey, a descendant of Hüsâmeddîn Hasan Bey, son of İbrahim Bey, formerly Emir of Canik, Tâceddîn. He came as governor (mutasarrıf) of the sanjak of Amasya at the end of the month of Rebîülevvel 1019 [1610–11]. A month later he was assigned to the Iranian War and went toward Diyarbekir. In his place the kethüdâyeri, İn'âm Beyzâde es-Seyyid Ali Ağa, became mütesellim of Amasya.

Because the former mütesellim of Amasya, Abdülfettah Ağa, was also removed from the post of tax collector and went to Istanbul, Yörgüç Paşazâde Hasan Bey, one of the Amasya ayan and of the çavuşes of the exalted court, became tax collector of Amasya in his place.

In Cemâziyelâhir, with the dismissal of the alaybeyi İskender Bey, Gürcü Ali Bey, one of the holders of great zeamets, had become alaybeyi of Amasya. But at the end of Ramazan Gürcü Ali Bey too was dismissed, and Yularkısdı Paşazâde İskender Bey again became alaybeyi of Amasya in his place.

In the month of Şevvâl, since Ebû Bekir Pasha, Governor of Sivas, was also dismissed because of the troublesome complaints of the notables of Sivas, Bosnalı Ca'fer Pasha, who had risen from the post of mîrâhur (master of the stables) to be beylerbeyi of Habeş, became governor of Sivas with the rank of vizier, and came to Amasya at the end of Zilkade. Three days later he went to Sivas.

At the beginning of Zilhicce, since the tax collector of Amasya, Yörgüç Paşazâde Hasan Bey, went off to become defterdar of Sivas, Hacı Beyzâde Mehmed Bey of Amasya, one of the çavuşes of the exalted court, became tax collector of Amasya in his place. This year, through the efforts of Kadızâde Ali Pasha, Governor of Baghdad, the beylerbeyilik of Basra was given to Ali Paşazâde Hüseyin Bey of Amasya, who was deputy (kaymakam) of Basra.

In the month of Muharrem 1020 [1611–12], the mütesellim of Amasya, es-Seyyid Ali Ağa, went to Diyarbekir taking certain goods and military supplies procured from Amasya; in his place Cebecizâde Mahmûd Ağa, one of the leading sipahis, became deputy mütesellim.

In Safer, Köse Ahmed Efendi, Mufti of Amasya, was dismissed because of certain faults; in his place Manavzâde Abdullah Efendi again came as mufti of Amasya and müderris (madrasa professor) of the Sultaniye Madrasa. In Istanbul, eş-Şeyh Hasan Efendi of Amasya, one of the great Gülşeniyye sheikhs and a famous righteous man, died.

The famous hadith scholar Abdurrahman Efendi of Zile wrote in the preface to his work "Kitâbü'l-Müfîd fî Şerhi'l-Hadîsi'l-Garîb" that at this time he went to Sivas and presented it to the Governor Ca'fer Pasha; he returned having won the vizier's favor.

At the end of Cemâziyelevvel, Grand Vizier Kuyucu Murâd Pasha died in Diyarbekir; in his place his rival Nasûh Pasha became grand vizier and commander-in-chief (serdâr-ı ekrem). Uçar Mustafa Ağa of Lâdik, who was Nasûh Pasha's steward (kethüda), also became steward of the grand vizier. Nasûh Pasha's tutor was İsmâil Efendi of Amasya.

At the beginning of Receb, since the alaybeyi of Amasya, İskender Bey, died, Seydî Beyzâde Mustafa Bey, who was subaşı, became alaybeyi in his place. The administration of the Bülbül Hâtun and Sinan Pasha waqfs, which İskender Bey had held, was given to his brother, the müteferrika Mustafa Bey.

On the first day of Şa'bân, in place of the kadı of Amasya, Abdülvehhâb Efendi, Abdülkerim Efendi, one of the great kadıs, became kadı of Amasya and inspector of all the waqfs in the province of Sivas. At this time Kadızâde Ali Pasha came to Amasya, dismissed from Baghdad; the order of Grand Vizier Nasûh Pasha that he was to stay there reached him.

During this year Şemseddîn Ahmed Pasha, Beylerbeyi of Şehrizor, died; only his son Ali Bey could inherit his property in Amasya. Likewise Emin Mehmed Pasha of Amasya, Governor of Aleppo, died in Aleppo. His son Mahmûd Bey became a mirliva (sanjak governor).

In the month of Muharrem 1021 [1612–13], Cebecizâde Mahmûd Ağa became kethüdâyeri and mütesellim of Amasya. His predecessor es-Seyyid Ali Ağa became voyvoda of Tokat and treasury commissioner (beytülmal emini) of Amasya; Lâdikli Mustafa Ağa, steward of the grand vizier, became beylerbeyi of Ankara; and Ömer Pasha of Amasya, dismissed from Maraş, was ordered to reside in the town of Hacı Hamza.

At the beginning of Safer, Kadızâde Ali Pasha, though he had written to Nasûh Pasha that he would set out for Istanbul and had twice asked permission, was again ordered to stay, and this order was reinforced; offended, he said "What is my crime that I should sit here for nothing?" and set out from Amasya toward Istanbul.

Kadızâde Ali Pasha was the son-in-law of Kuyucu Murat Pasha. Because Nasûh Pasha was the relentless enemy of Murat Pasha and of his relatives and supporters, he had put to death for no reason Murad Pasha's steward Bîçâre Mustafa Ağa and his treasurer Hüseyin Ağa, and by dismissing Murad Pasha's other steward Ömer Pasha from Maraş and Ali Pasha from Baghdad, he had ordered both of them to reside in one place.

When Ali Pasha reached Eskişehir, despite the third order to stay put that came from Nasûh Pasha, he left his heavy baggage and men there with his steward Ahmed Ağa and went to Üsküdar himself. Learning of this, Nasûh Pasha petitioned the sultan for the said vizier to be killed, but since Sultan Ahmed I did not consent, Ali Pasha settled in Istanbul.

Ca'fer Pasha, Governor of Sivas, examined the complaints of the notables of Sivas, which looked very grave, and, on understanding that they were much exaggerated and arose from an effort to escape Mehmed Pasha's harshness, settled the matter by executing some of the notables of Sivas and sending others into exile. Thus Mehmed Pasha too was saved.

In the month of Rebîülâhir, since Osmân Pasha of Canik, Governor of Amasya, became beylerbeyi of Erzurum, the sanjak of Amasya was given, on the recommendation of Governor Ca'fer Pasha, to Hasan Bey, defterdar of Sivas.

Kuyucu Murad Pasha and Nasûh Pasha

Two grand viziers stand out throughout the text. Kuyucu Murad Pasha became grand vizier in 1606 and is famous for suppressing the Celali revolts in Anatolia. The Pasha, who is said to have been of Croatian origin, died at an age past ninety on 25 Cemâziyelevvel 1020 (5 August 1611). Hüsameddin mentions his death in this entry as "at the end of Cemâziyelevvel" and gives the place of death as Diyarbekir. In the encyclopedic source the place of death is given as Cülek, and it is written that the body was first buried temporarily in Diyarbekir and later moved to his tomb beside his madrasa in Vezneciler, Istanbul. There is a small difference between Hüsameddin's information and this record.

The origin of Nasûh Pasha, who became grand vizier after Kuyucu's death, is disputed. In the sources it is reported that he was the son of a Greek priest from Drama, while some sources say he was of Albanian origin. A noteworthy detail is that for a time Nasûh Pasha, as voyvoda of Zile, administered the hass (crown estates) of the Valide Sultan. He became beylerbeyi of Sivas in 1604 and governor of Baghdad in 1606, and, having failed to take Baghdad, was given the beylerbeyilik of Diyarbekir. The sources write that Kuyucu Murad Pasha regarded him as a rival and for that reason had him removed from the region and appointed to Egypt, and that the grand vizierate was given to him when Kuyucu fell ill and died after a banquet given by Nasûh Pasha. There is a rumor that Kuyucu was poisoned by Nasûh Pasha; but this is only a rumor.

Nasûh Pasha married the sultan's daughter Ayşe Sultan in 1612 and was executed on 13 Ramazan 1023 (17 October 1614). Among the reasons for the execution the sources count the Sinop raid, the rumor that he had secretly formed an alliance with Shah Abbas, and the allegation that he sent his own men into Anatolia on financial assignments and had them collect taxes unlawfully. In a later entry Hüsameddin is seen giving Nasûh Pasha's execution as "toward the end of Ramazan", that is, at the end of the month; in the encyclopedic record the date is the thirteenth day of the month.

The Conflict between Kadızâde Ali Pasha and Nasûh Pasha

The most vivid part of the text is Kadızâde Ali Pasha's being forced to stay in Amasya and his eventual flight to Istanbul. That Ali Pasha was the son-in-law of Kuyucu Murad Pasha, and that Nasûh Pasha harbored enmity toward those around Kuyucu and made many enemies around himself, are also written in the sources. Ali Pasha was among the delegation that negotiated the Treaty of Zsitvatorok in 1606 and received the rank of vizier in 1610. The information Hüsameddin gives, "Murad Pasha's steward and treasurer were killed, Ömer Pasha was dismissed", appears somewhat differently in the encyclopedic source: it is written that after Murad Pasha's death his steward Ömer and his kapıcıbaşı (head of palace gatekeepers) Sarı Hüseyin Ağa were killed. There is disagreement in names and ranks; both agree in the picture of Nasûh Pasha purging Kuyucu's supporters.

Ali Pasha's later situation also agrees with Hüsameddin's account: in 1614 he became beylerbeyi of Buda for the fourth time and died in Belgrade in 1616. The detail Hüsameddin gives, "the sanjak of Vize was given under the retirement arrangement", fills the interval in between. There is disagreement among the sources on whether Ali Pasha was from Amasya; one source names his father as Habil Efendi, kadı of Buda.

Those About Whom No Information Was Found

In searches on Osmân Pasha of Canik, Bosnalı Ca'fer Pasha, Ebû Bekir Pasha and Şemseddîn Ahmed Pasha, no source was found verifying these terms of office. No information was found about the work of Abdurrahman Efendi of Zile named here either.
