In Modern English

He was a native of Amasya. He was the son of Saçlı el-Hâc Osmân Efendi, son-in-law of the former mufti of Amasya, Çorumlu es-Seyyid el-Hâc Hâfız Mehmed Efendi. He completed his studies in the teaching circle of Iydîzâde el-Hâc Mustafa Âkif Efendi, the unique great scholar of Amasya, and received the authority to give public lessons.

He taught the sciences for years, and when his scholarly merits became evident, on the completion in 1171 [1757-58] of the Süleymaniye Madrasa, built near Narlıbahçe by Türedizâde el-Hâc Süleyman Ağa, one of the notables of the city, he became its first müderris (madrasa professor) on his teacher's recommendation, with an opening ceremony held.

He continued to teach also at the Receb Mosque near this madrasa and greatly enlivened it. The imam of this mosque, Saatçizâde es-Seyyid el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi, was likewise one of the notables of the country and a man of learning, so that the mosque's standing had risen.

While occupied with preaching and teaching he died in 1187 [1773-74]. He is buried beside his father in the Halfet Cemetery. He was a scholar, a poet, a perfect man of letters. His son was es-Seyyid Abdülkerîm Efendi.

The Narlıbahçe (Süleymaniye) Madrasa

In a study that treats the madrasas of Amasya, the Narlı Bahçe Madrasa is described as a building on the road to the west of the cemetery in front of the Princes' Tomb. According to the study, the madrasa was built in 1753 by Türedizâde el-Hâc Hâfız Süleyman Ağa, city steward and one of the notables of Amasya; it was of wood and had eleven rooms, a lecture hall and a large garden. Because the garden was called "Narlı Bahçe", the madrasa and the cemetery around it took this name, and the madrasa was also called the Süleymaniye Madrasa. What Hüsameddin gives about the Süleymaniye Madrasa and Türedizâde Süleyman Ağa agrees with this description.

The difference lies in the date. The study writes 1753, while Hüsameddin says that the madrasa was completed in 1171 [1757-58]. The four or five years between may come from the span between the start and the end of construction; this is an inference. In addition, when the study lists the müderris who served at the Narlı Bahçe Madrasa, Bakır Mehmed Efendi's name does not appear: the list names Hâfız Abdullah Efendi, Elbistanlı İbrahim Efendi, Hâfız Mehmed Efendi, Erzincanlı Evliyâ İbrahim Efendi, es-Seyyid Hasan Efendi, an es-Seyyid from Mecitözü, İskilipli Hüseyin Efendi and again a Hâfız Mehmed Efendi. How the person Hüsameddin calls "the first müderris" fits with this list could not be determined from the sources read.

Length of Service

According to Hüsameddin, Bakır Mehmed Efendi taught in this circle from 1171 [1757-58], when the madrasa opened, until his death in 1187 [1773-74], that is, for sixteen years. No information was found in other sources on his teachers Iydîzâde el-Hâc Mustafa Âkif Efendi and Saatçizâde es-Seyyid el-Hâc Mehmed Efendi, imam of the Receb Mosque, on his father Saçlı el-Hâc Osmân Efendi, his grandfather the mufti of Çorum, Hâfız Mehmed Efendi, and his son es-Seyyid Abdülkerîm Efendi, or on the Receb Mosque and the Halfet Cemetery.
